2hrs later, i went into my car, starter voltage 8.1v (may well have busted it chemically, but so far it's OK).

Just jumped it off the auxillary battery (nice to have) and then let alternator charge for a few hrs... then ran my ac-dc charger as soon as i got home next day, which ran a 7 stage conditionning routine over it.

Needless to say there was a few "sorry mate, sorry" going around camp ha ha.

Time to do the headlights off with key off mod!

I am half way through setting up my 2nd battery,

Just purchased a Redarc 1220 - Piranha tray & a Superstart 110 A/hr deep cycle marine battery :D

I have someone installing it all for me, (no time myself and business deduction)

Putting engel/cig & usb power to the tub (2013 DC SR5 Diesel Hilux)

While he's at it, getting Anderson plug from tow bar direct to 2nd batt with the idea for solar to be hooked directly via that, also have a caravan with future idea of running small 12v system throughout.

Was going to get the solar version of the Redarc but any solar set up i go with with have a regulator built in anyway,

Getting 2 x HID's and 1 x led light bar hooked up at the same time,

EXCITED!

Oh back on topic - I have done a bit of reading and the 1220 suited my needs :D

I have just read this even tho i have just started installing a bcdc 1240. I hope its not too big. The reason i got the 1240 is cause it was $440 new apposed to $380 for the 1225. I dont plan on it now but in the future i may run a 3rd battery. Ive got a change over relay just wondering where you guys have pulled an ignition wire from?
Cheers, Stuart

You can usually find an easy ignition at the wiper motor.

Only just saw this post but I did a fair bit of research recently when I was installing my redarc.

I was told by redarc that the 1240 is too high a charge rate if it is an under bonnet install. Temps are too high.

If battery is being installed in the tub then 1240 is fine.

Guys if you're unsure which size redarc to go, look at page 2 of this redarc brochure in the bottom left corner

http://www.redarc.com.au/images/uploads/images/Redarc_BCDC1225_25A_in-vehicle_battery_charger_130408.pdf

Edit: In regards to the LV model or not. On my 2009 Diesel I didn't get the LV model because my voltage never drops below 13.4V

Normal Model (Taken from the redarc BCDC1225 manual)
Turn ON above 13.2V
Turn OFF below 12.7V

LV Model (Taken from the redarc BCDC1225-LV manual)
Turn ON above 12.0V
Turn OFF below 11.9V

Ok everyone,

I am super confused now  ! I was lucky enough to pick up a new redarc bcdc1240 for $300 off gumtree it is NOT the "LV" version. So basically want to know WILL it work in my 2014 SR5? Or should I get the "LV" version?!??

We camp a lot and dont do much driving once set up except getting wood etc and am happy I bleach the vehicle running while cutting. I run a 60lt weaco and General other led lights and chargers.

I was certain when I bought it that it would be ok, now I'm just confused!!!!

Thanks in advance!

You will be right with that model. I asked the ECU Controlled Variable Voltage Alternator or Temperature Voltage Compensating Alternator question on the "Alternator" thread here:

And confirmed suspicions by Bansheebuzz, the alternator specialist, here:

Hi
I found this old thread and thought I would ask.
Is anyone using Thunder weekenders or another similar brand? I came across this site https://www.customoffroad.com.au/produc ... lectrical/ which seems to be selling redarcs and cteks so was wondering if the Redarc was still "the best" vs Ctek or the Thunder option. He also seems to be cheaper than eBay and about a five minute drive from my place which is good.

That being said is a Thunder weekender any good to begin with - I like the 240 plug and circuit breaker I have to admit but if there's a better option I'd be keen to hear it. I did look at the Bainbridge power tops but I don't think you can take the top off them like the wekeenders if your battery dies.

I also like that portable battery out of the hilux so if camping or in another car you can shift it really easily rather than the frozen in battery tray

So point being which dcdc would work with these systems say if you're getting a 100 battery and solar?

Hope that makes sense and I didn't go to the wrong thread

Thanks

Hi Guys
Been reading through a number of threads, i currently have a piranaha 180 which ive use in a few utes over the years, it has been good but doesnt quite charge the battery fully due to the alternator in the lux, i have been considering redarc 1225 but my aux 120 agm battery is under the tray and as redarc say mount as close to the second battery as possible so first question would it be ok to mount is under the tray with dirt water etc ?

Secondly my local redarc dealer wanted to install 1250 because i sometimes tow a campertrailer with 2 100amp agm, when i spoke to redarc the said put a 1225 in the ute and a 1240 in the trailer this seems a very expensive option to fit 2 units, from what ive read on the forum even the 1240 seems to big just for ute ? would appreciate any thoughts ?
Thanks
Matt C

The charger will be fine under the tray, they're a fully sealed unit. The 1225 would take forever to charge three batteries at 25amps when connected. I'd go with a second charger in the van mate.

Be careful of overloading your alternator. Pulling an extra 40 to 60 amps will produce a lot of alternator heat, it will be pushing it to 100% output which they are not designed for, in normal operation they only hit that output for a few seconds.
DC DC chargers will hold it there for hours if your batteries are low.
Would be wise to fit a 130 amp alternator and get a bit of breathing space back.
