Boost

Postby Tuflux1kd on Fri, 06 Jun 2014 3:14 +0000

Hey guys,

I recently had a reconditioned turbo out in my car as when I bought the lux the turbo was destroyed. Then that turbo blow aswell! Turns out it was a busted bearing, every one is saying it's because it was a dodgy reco, but I'd still like to make sure I'm doing everything I can to try and stop this happening to my BRAND NEW genuine toyota turbo witch I paid $3500 for.

Does anyone know how much boost the 06 3.0ltr d4d's run?

Cheers, Mitch.

Thanks boxhead, do you know how boost is adjusted with these variable vein turbos?

Yep like this
Image

The stepper motor is controls by the boost ecu to move the vans open and closed to direct the exhaust onto and away from the compressor wheel
This is why you get good boost so low in the rev range. And do not require a waist gate.

I'd be checking the oil supply to the turbo. A blocked pipe? Wouldn't over boost set a fault?

Boost

160kpa amphoteric reading

Not actual.

This is what you will see on most scan gauges and tech stream

10 to 12 psi is the target.(actual)

I have a mechanical boost gauge and it shows 22-23psi at it's peak, relating to this topic, does anyone know why at around 2000rpm @ 10psi and consistent throttle position the boost will go from 10 to 8 then back to 10? Just keeps fluctuating around the 2k rev mark

Cheers

If your egr is blocked or dirty the intake throttle plate will close a little or a lot depending in requirements and boost will increase via shutting the variable vans some

This allows for correct flow of egr which is measures via the map and maf sensors.

So people who say blocking the egr increases performance are clueless?

I have a steady pulse in my exhaust if I listen at the tail pipe, and a loud pulse on the exhaust side of the engine around the manifold/turbo area. is this caused by this egr thing or do I have a problem elsewhere. it is loud enough that I hear it in the cab when driving. I also sometimes have a loud knock at idle on cold start-up.

Whats the easiest way to find out what boost level your ute is running at?
Guessing its either fitting a boost gauge or using a Scantool/Scangauge and a smart phone yeah?

You should check the oil supply for the turbo. The pipe is easily removed from the turbo.
Remove it and check if it isn't clogged up. Also check the oil pick up in the sump. You can see this when you drain the oil and look in the hole.

Hunting that you can hear in the exhaust (sounds like cam roll, that's what I wish it is ;) ) can sometimes be an indicator to an injector pump that's seen better days.

Do you have a chip or tuned ECU? They alter boost readings to fool the ecu into demanding more boost.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

na, no chip or ecu work, 3" exhaust is only mod.
