Awning Size? What you do recommend?

Postby The B Man on Tue, 20 May 2014 4:10 +0000

Hi all.

I want to purchase an awning, just wondering what size i should get. Im getting a canopy with gull wing windows so I dont want the awning to get in the way of the window when i open it up. But then I dont want something soo small that it doesnt protect you from the sun or rain.

Im not fussed on brand, Tigerz11 have them on the cheap at the moment so might head that way.

Also do i need roof racks to mount the awning?

Cheers.

Hey mate I have a 2.5 x 2.5 ARB awning on my ute, I was looking at roo systems awning at the time and decided against it as I heard/ read reviews about both the upright legs collapsing after a few uses. The twist mechanism itself. On both the tigerz and roo so I was turned off.. Ultimately it's upto you on what you buy.
I can't help with the height clearance with the canopy though.
I think there is a thread for awnings on here but I don't know how to link them sorry

I have the arb 2.5mtr long awning that rolls out 2mtrs. Think its the biggest they make. They mount via two aluminum rails on the back of the awning and you need at least 2 or more points to hold it (4 bolts) I have 4 sets and ive made my own custom brackets to mount to my building roof racks. Its impossible to get off so good luck to someone wanting to steal it haha.

I have 2.5 m Awning and love it. I spent a bit more and got a quality unit. You can't beat Australian canvas! I have got all the walls as well. It's made a few high country storms a bit more enjoyable :)

mine is 2.5 wide by 2m out ... i wanted it to run along the vehicle moreso than out from it. Ironman (mate worked there, cheap cheap)

Doesnt get in way of my swing up windows on canopy (unless you drop the awning too far down but then my head would it it anyway.)

Also gotta be careful of opening hilux doors if the awning is too low it can rip it with the sharp edge of door.

mate with ranger has the 2m wide by 2.5m out from vehicle. Same same really, some days the angle of cars vs sun his is hbetter, other days mine is.

I tend to use an occy strap with something heavy suspended as a means to tie them down.

Cheers Qwerty just the info i was after. You have the canopy I want. Just got a quote today, 8-10 weeks delivery time. $2390 Just in time for summer to come back around. lol

Just took a look at the Ironman Awning. it looks a little bit sturdier than the Tigerz11 brand. I guess ill have to see them in person to make a decision in regards to build quality.

Cheers

The B Man, I looked at the iron man awing and really liked it, even came with a light. the only issue for me was I wanted a 2.5m x 2.5m and at the time it was only ARB I found to have it. I rang tjm and they wanted $380 for the 2 x 2.5 and ARB was 2.5x2.5 for $329 I was happy with that incl mounting kit
Iron man was pretty close to these figures too

I paid sub $200 for mine :) do haggle on the IM stuff.

Build quality isn't bad , not superb.

The wind got mine a few times and bent the frame a bit but still ok.

Also my arb one took most of the weight of my ute once when I side swiped a tree in a riverbed, it stopped me getting water up to the bottom of my tray! The canvas ripped abit and bent the internal stand holder housing but still works, just has battle scars now haha

Thanks for the info. I guess i might have to visit a few places to see whats out there. Im still not 100% sure on what size i will get. Was thinking 2mx2m just to keep it small and have less chance of catching the wind but i suppose there is no point of putting an awning up if it provides almost no shelter. Will have to pull out the measuring tape and figure it out. But i am learning towards the 2.5m wide x 2m out.

I guess its not the most expensive purchase im making, if it fails ill just by a new one.

this is my awning its called a foxwing, its from oztent little big for the quick 30 minute stop on the side of the road but in saying that it only takes 30 seconds to un fold and fold up once you do it twice you'll have the nack of it and for good cover while camping over night gives you alot of weather protection...

I've got the tigerz11 2m x 2.5m
I don't have it mounted on the car all the time but was on there most of the summer.
Noticed the canvas has been rubbing the poles when packed away and I can't get the straps tight enough to stop it, so I put a piece of cardboard in between canvas on the last fold.
For $150 im happy with the awning

I think the foxwing is a little overkill for what I need. How heavy is it all rolled up? I won't be having my awning permanently mounted so need to be able to put it on and off again by myself.

I wouldn't go less than 2.5 it's still not a lot of room underneath. I just bought a Rhino awning extension for my 2.5 meter ARB awning. In total Ill have 2.5 x 4 meters. The extension also comes with a set of poles so you can raise it or lower it for a wind break or privacy.
