If it's a 2006 V6 check your battery age - if its reading under 12.5 Volts the fuel pump might not opp at full power for start up.

I don't have a minimum voltage during cranking to start but I do know after trouble shooting 3 2005-2006 Hilux's with the standard Panasonic battery that once they age and drop below 12.5 volts the fuel pump will not operate correctly.

If it's diesel make sure the pump is fully primed and the button on the top of the filter is firm to the push

No battery will hold a steady 14volts...

Sounds like it could be an immobiliser issue, or a lack of fuel getting to the rail

As stated, make sure you're getting fuel to the pump. A random air leak can cause this.

Also, bad batch of fuel might have locked up your Suction Control Valve in the pump, thus it wont pump. As stated, could also be an electrical / immobaliser issue - in which case, im no bloody help at all :D

How would I check to see if the suction control valve is blocked or is a mechanic job and does anyone know how to check immobiliser or is it a job for auto Sparky, cheers for any help Mark

immobiliser - when you're cranking (or even just with key turned to ignition) the security light in the lower right dash panel should switch off. If it stays on or blinking, then you've possibly got an immobiliser issue.

Thank you mitch_893 but I never said the battery will be able to hold 14 volts while cranking.

The V6 Hilux will require a healthy battery and if its reading under 12.5 volts before you turn the key certain Ancillaries will not function and will not start - a lot of modern vehicles are now like this.

Cheers

It's also true though that batteries generally won't hold over 14v off-charge.

Normal standby voltage for a car battery is about 12.7v to 13.5v. I doubt most modern cars are designed to to not work properly without a minimal starting voltage of at least 14v.

Thanks Steven,

Gulf, as I said, batteries will maintain around 12 volts. Batteries charge at 13.5-14v, but will always drop back to the 12ish volts. When cranking, this will drop up to a couple of volts. The system cannot magically create volts until its actualy running. Therefore, the pump and ancillaries typically will still function with 10v.
Control modules mostly output 5v.

The older Isuzu diesels (rodeo/jackaroo) all needed very strong batteries. If its less then 12 or 11v, they will still crank happily but never fire.

Sorry I miss quoted myself reading from the Toyota 1GR-FE V6 manual and European Diesels - I apologise for the inconvenience.

I have no diagnostic experience with the D4 and was only making a suggestion that the European Diesels require non traditional 12 volts to start....

12.82 Volts for the 1GR-FE V6 at battery standby - no load

A minimum 13.5 Volts for the 1GR-FE while engine is running to run all ancillaries.

I cannot find minimum cranking voltage so this engine will start - but I have experience with the 1GR-FE that it will crank over sounding fine but will not start as it requires a minimum voltage to run the fuel pump.

I only posted as this is a hard problem to diagnose as Toyota Aus did not give min load voltage to start - phil a member here actually found the fuel pump runs at 3 Stages and dispite the starter sounding like it's cranking the engine fast if you don't have a minimum start voltage it will not run. But it seems to occur when the battery has aged & is below 12.5 Volts.

Sorry I wrote and posted without rereading and have corrected the post - hope I have not offended

Cheers

Thanks everyone security light stays on while cranking ignition so possible immobiliser problem any suggestion would be great

Might be the key? Maybe try changing the battery?

if the lights on id say almost certain a fault with the immobiliser system.
in regards to just changing the key battery, 99% sure the battery does not have anything to do with the immobiliser chip. battery is just for the remote locking. obviously being on holiday you dont have the spare key with you. but there is no guarantee that its the key, could be the actual module.

As Mitch_893 said, the battery inside the key is only for the remote central locking part - the immobiliser portion of the key isn't actually powered and works like a smart card so to speak.

I'd be checking for any faults with the coil receiver in the steering column

Thanks everyone pretty sure the key got a guy to come out in couple of hours who said its 99% transponder chip in key and he has got some and can program the truck to use it?when checking if truck was getting fuel through to pump took off line to diesel pump do you have to bleed fuel system and if so how or there a three that explains this elsewhere on the forum as im a Newby to this forum.cheers for ya help
