safe coolant temp?

As the title suggests, whats the max you should let the coolant temp get up to? I have a scan guage and ive seen it up to 96-7 degrees c so backed off. I have a steinbauer and 3inch zorst too

On a hot day with the air con running ive seen it over 105-108 degrees. This was driving fast in the Blue Mountains (Bells line of Road)

Ive seen it at 120 degrees on the beach!!

The computer turns off the AC and then cuts power as it gets hotter to look after the engine as it heats up.

My mate D4D hilux overheated on the freeway because the radiator was blocked with mud. First thing he knew was the engine light came on and the temp gauge was all the way up. Let it cool down and sorted it out when we got home ans have had so problems since..

The Temps will also vary depending on where the sensor is located and what type.

Mine is in the top radiator hose so it gets the coolant as its comes out of the engine-straight out of the fire! It is also an Autron unit with an Autron gauge. I can watch the temp vary almost straight away depending on my driving style. On a warm day, having the air con on will create a noticeable change in temp.

The scan gauge uses the factory temp sensor hence different values. So would suggest that my set up may be a bit more responsive to changes compared to using a Scan guage

While 80-90 may be the "standard" operating temp of a motor vehicle, the reality is that our Hilux's run between 86-88 normally.
I cant see how a brand of coolant will make that much of a difference. I know a better quality will perform better in the long run, but I doubt that it would make a noticeable different considering they are all mostly water with anti corrosion inhibitors added.....

Chances are its been over 88 degrees.. you probably don't watch it all the time.... mines on the A pillar so I see it more than I see the speedo!!

Must say running 33,s and chip it and auto . You are certainly going to be going over 88 . On the scan gauge . That's for sure the standard temp gauge won't move . 88 for me is average before mods it was. 85 . Can hit 90 or just above if I give it some berries

Can definatly agree !! I had repco coolant in before frazer island didnt find time to change it. Driving up the tip at high tide (stupid mistake) Nek minute tempreture gauge in red and coolant pissing out eveywhere under the bonnet. Got home changed it to nulon ran it fully loaded again up rehead beach with 18psi in tyres to really test it and temp gauge went to 2/3rds and wouldnt go higher

I was more trying to say that the coolant temps in our hilux's will vary for many different reasons, more depending on the operating environment and less as to which brand of coolant they are running...

I wouldn't put crap stuff in anyway and tend to stick to Nulon for most of my fluids and oils aswell

A few years ago in my 98 hilux I broke a radiator while on a hunting trip.I managed to get one out of an old Falcon from the wreckers at Nevertire and tie wire it in and had to fill it with tap water. I ran this for 2 weeks and about 1500kms before I put the new one in and there was no noticeable difference in performance or temperature gauge movement.

I've had Vigo's on the dyno to 105 with the gauge still at half. I let them cool down from there before tuning any further.

never reached 100 before even on long steep roads. reading is from obd btw not aftermarket sensors. so i guess normal factoring our climate here, its around 70- hi 80 cel.

I set my alarm for 103. 01 hilux thou.

Im not a fan of running hotter than 100.

Different coolants will react to the hotter operating temperatures in varies ways.
The ceiling on the Toyota SLLC coolant is 140 degrees C before you have any break down within the chemical make up of the product.
After 30 years + on and off in the diesel fitting business, I have seen my far share of water pumps and cooling system failures.
It pays to use the best coolant out there because diesel engines run pretty hot because it's a by product of the torque you get. Let me put that another way, the more torque that is produced the more heat that will be produced. Where ever there is an action there is a reaction.
So, with this in mind, you should really look after your cooling system in a diesel engine.
Coolant is an important part of the mix within a cooling system.

Just a pic showing how much the coolant temp can vary according to the driving conditions:

Coolant temp: 92 degrees
8 PSI Boost
EGT 370 degrees
5th gear, 2400 RPM


Just to make sure we compare apples with apples:
33's, Manual, 3 inch exhaust with probe in dump, coolant temp sensor in top radiator hose....

how does the dashboard meter work on coolant temp.

mine is down on cold (duh)
on 70celcius it's at 25%
at operating temp 84c it's spot on 50%
however when my ODB plug reported 96c it was still spot on in the middle!

After which point of the dashboard meter moving further up?
What is accepted temps? I decided to open windows and use he heater when it got to 95c, that works for pushing it back under 90c.

30celcius outside, 4th gear, trailer on long up hills. Those are the main concerns.

maybe some mud in the radiator, and i can manage the cooling, just wondering why the gauge sits at 'perfect spot' at 84celcius and still sits in the same spot at 98c!

Yep, mine sits at mid level at 85 celcius and yesterday my ODBII dongle showed 105 celcius but the gauge still dead in the middle.

Didn't want to o any higher. will get a new rad, quality coolant and see what that does.

The winch is blocking some airflow and 200k km of leftover mud in the radiator won't help.
Also used k-seal ~80k km's ago and that still is in the coolant. Could potentually block up parts of the radiator.

My 105 celcius score was with 30celcius outside, baking sun, long up hill slope in France.
