Firewall insulation breaking down

Postby Darkie79 on Sun, 12 May 2013 11:53 +0000

I am wondering if anyone has had the same problem I ran into this weekend.
I went to turn my AC from recycle to fresh and it was jammed up. When I got home and started pulling the dash apart I found a big chunk of the firewall insulation had fallen off and jammed in the vent. I pulled it and and that fixed the AC although upon further inspection I noticed the rubber backing is breaking down and becoming brittle. Think I might have give Toyota a visit and say WTF.

What are the stats of your Lux?? Since its cooled down I've been turning the demister on in the mornings (you know the windscreen one, blows a/c air out at windscreen only)... But then when I go back to just a/c the system gets 'stuck' and won't go back to air con.

I've got the same issue Darkie on an black 08 SR5, what colour is yours? I live right at the top of the NT and always park in the sun, so I figured it was the heat melting the glue off the back of the insulation. Would be good to know how many other people have had this happen.

Logged a warranty claim at Toyota today. They said straight up that there is no chance of the claim going through due to my lux being out of warranty for 12 months. Still cannot beleive a 4 year old car is having a problem like this. I'd even go as far as saying it could be a fire hazard.

Well after a few phone calls with Toyota they have said that its general wear and tear and they will not be fixing the firewall. I had a 30 year old Holden that didn't have an issue like this. Would never have expected it to happen to a car that is 4 year old.

Same deal with the rubber on your doors and inside the fuel filler,,, Have you noticed on all four of your doors were the window meets the paint,, all along the bottom edge only on every hilux i have seen has small dots like pimples or scabs..
The sides and top of the window surrounds are perfect, only the bottom one seems to have the marks,,,

Its not sun damage cause the fuel filler has it to!!!!
******If you can ignore it its not a real problem******

black sticky rubber stuff falling from under dash

Postby hiluxMick on Sun, 29 Mar 2015 7:13 +0000

Just noticed lately with my 6 y.o. hilux that strips of black rubbery padding tape are falling out from under the dash into the driver's footwell. If I don't notice them they get trodden on and turn into tar like blobs that get on on your shoes, the peddles, etc.
Anybody else noticed this? where are the strips coming from?

yeah i get this too. my ute is 08. i assume it is either fire retardent off the fire wall or sound deadening. either way im certain its not meant to fall off

I was wondering if anyone else was getting this, I have a 2008 SR5 DC and the sound deadener from the firewall has been falling down in bits for a while now. A piece of this fell across the fresh / recycle air control and stopped it from latching into position (I had to open up the dash to fix it, at least that was all it was).
I wasn't going to do anything about this stuff myself and just harvest the bits that fall off, but if you wanted to stop it, you could:-
A) Reach under your dash and tear off the loose bits where you can.
or
B) Go to the trouble of removing your floor covering and the offending deadener, then replace with generic deadener from car part suppliers.
Anyway don't stress, just make sure no bits can foul anything around your foot well or under dash, if in doubt tear it out. ;)

Well, it looks like I'm not the only one. It wasn't worrying me, it's just annoying.

Have had the same thing happening to me. It's annoying as hell. What's the temperature like where you guys are? I suspected it was from the scorching North Queensland days up here melting it

Northern NSW coastal - 35 deg max, usually more like 28 summer temp.
It's only been in the last 6 months that this has started happening to me.

Yeah had the same thing happen on mine. Does seem that hot weather sets it going. I got in there with a Stanley knife on a cold day so it was fairly solid and tore out all I could. Haven't bothered replacing it yet, not sure if I will.
