Firewall insulation breaking down

General discussion of basically anything Hilux related

Has anyone outside of warranty taken it up with Toyota? I'd say it should be a safety related recall if it's dropping out of the foot wells, with the chance it could foul the brake or jam the accelerator on.

My 2012 is only a few months outside of warranty and it's just started to fall out.

G,day Brett, my Lux is a 2012 and was 2 months out of warranty and had the same problem. I went to the local Toyota dealer and they sent the claim to Toyota and it was approved so long as I contributed to the cost. From memory I think they wanted me to contribute around $ 200.
I declined as they had to remove the whole dash to do it ( too many accessories fitted) an pulled out all the old stuff I could get to myself and put in Dynamat to replace it.

This has just started happening on my November 2011 Hilux. has been a bit warm lately over here in WA. Anyone have any luck with Toyota out of warranty?

I've just had mine replaced by Toyota, but I was only 6 months out of warranty.

Local dealer did say they had just had another Hilux with the same issue. It was a dark colour too.

whitelux08 wrote:I was wondering if anyone else was getting this, I have a 2008 SR5 DC and the sound deadener from the firewall has been falling down in bits for a while now. A piece of this fell across the fresh / recycle air control and stopped it from latching into position (I had to open up the dash to fix it, at least that was all it was).
I wasn't going to do anything about this stuff myself and just harvest the bits that fall off, but if you wanted to stop it, you could:-
A) Reach under your dash and tear off the loose bits where you can.
or
B) Go to the trouble of removing your floor covering and the offending deadener, then replace with generic deadener from car part suppliers.
Anyway don't stress, just make sure no bits can foul anything around your foot well or under dash, if in doubt tear it out. ;)

Where abouts was yours blocked up from mine won't go the recirculate only stays on fresh air wondering if I have the same issue or if it's some thing ells
I can move it all the way to the right for fresh air but only about 3/4 to the left to recirculate and it won't engage

Glad to read all of these entries. I was having same problem, the black stuff sticks to your shoes and even got on our floors at home. It's really hard to remove. At least now I know what it is. I also had the problem of it blocking my air vent.

Mine is doing it too, I have not worried about it but, maybe I should fix it before it jams something.

2011 sr5 been dropping chunks of this stuff for the past 6 months. I'm in Wollongong and it doesn't get that hot.

Had same problem with fresh air/recirculate in that it wouldn't slide all the way across to recirculate. Mentioned this problem to my mechanic while having a service done today.

He fixed the problem....... the piece that had broken away & caused things to get stuck was the length of the handbreak & as wide as your palm... even had a piece of felt stuff attached to it!!!!!! Wish i could post a pic of it.

Not happy Jan.

You would not expect this from a Toyota would you? Obviously a common problem that Toyota should have recalled. It not like it is an isolated problem judging by all of the posts, 2008 to present models are having the same problem, are Toyota fixing the late models that are still under warranty?
I would maybe expect this from a Korean or Chinese manufacturer but not a Japanese one especially Toyota!

Makes me want to sell my hilux......

I have a 2013 Hilux same issue has just be repaired under warranty. Something to keep in mind is that all cars must have a reasonable warranty period usually 5 years under consumer law, I suggest doing some research and get to know your rights. Cheers

Happened to ours also, 2013 model. Out of warranty. Dealer reckons Toyota will provide the replacement
firewall insulation but we have to pay for the labour, $900 to $1000. Anyone have any joy getting it done
for less with the vehicle out of warranty?

Good news for us, tried to ring Toyota, waste of time ringing the guest experience centre, automated nothing.
Sent email to guestexperience early last week, no reply, tried again last night to customerexperience, phone call this morning. Toyota are now going to cover parts and labour.

I have this problem also with my 2012.

My vent change is jammed i.e Head/Foot, windscreen etc. I took the head unit out but couldn't work out how to get into the vent to fix.

Can anyone help steer me in the right direction?
