Ive got a 2005 single cab V6 petrol Hilux and the previous owner fitted an auxiliary 50L fuel tank from an 80 series, it has a separate neck filler and is not gravity fed but has a pump with in dash switch which takes about 20-30 minutes to transfer the lot to the main tank. It sit up above the chassis rails under the tray and makes my fuel capacity I think 126 litres, so not a huge capacity but good enough for my purposes.

I thought this might be a cheaper option for some people if they've got the DIY skills.

All the cross bracing around the spare wheel carrier. So if u measure from where the chain hangs down to the sides. An then 2 the front and rear cross brace. And anhtging else nere by. I want to fit a 70ltr aux tank above the spare wheel. But it only makes them for the last model but im pretty sure there almost identical under the try. ( not including leaf length ) so it sould still fit the new model lux.. thanks heaps

Anyone know of anywhere else other than "The Long Ranger" that does a second fuel tank where the spare wheel goes? want something in there for fuel but the $1500 + price tag is out of my league and want to know if there are any other options.

frontrunner did this auxillary fuel tank a while ago.
I have it in my MK7 but it has some disadvantages - 1st, the Spare wheel is lowered an inch or so - not so severe because of the long distance between the axle and the rear end of the rig. My spare does almost never have contact to the ground.
And 2nd - the refueling is more complicated. The you have to do it more slow than usual, the fuel keeps comming up. I have the combination for about 150T km and though refueled many times. I learned to live with that but in countries where there are full service gas stations its sometimes hard to convince the service crew that the tank is NOT full just because the hose has stopped. They are offten stunned of the amount that could be added if you do it carefully ;)

Dont know If frontrunner are still doing them.

Thanks mate,

Not too worried about the spare tyre as the one i was looking at you have to remove the spare tyre.

Why spare wheels will go on the back of my canopy.

Second point is something to think about but i believe these above have a second fill point.

Cheers

Hey Diezel45, what are you planning to do with it - will the setup be for the long term or something like a trip?
I might be wrong.

Will be long term mate. Just weighing up the options between a long range replacement tank or an aux tank where the spare wheel is.

Yeah I remember going through the same process. I went with a replacement tank as at the time I was worried about how low the spare would sit. I'd do the same again but this time with the lighter arb plastic tank.

Thanks :) starting to think my 2x20ltr Jerry cans enough. $1500 is a bit exy for an extra few litres and all the installation woes. ;)

Gipsy, it really depends on your usage and timing the purchase to get a good deal. Noting that a lot of the caravan/camping shows have been cancelled, ARB usually have some good sales on when they are operating; we got free installation for our Frontier Tank at the Perth Show. When we lived in WA the long range tank paid for itself as we could buy in low cost areas and get around 1,100km per tank when towing. We sometimes carried two jerry cans which gave us 185litres of fuel and really made huge savings. Even now living on an island only where the longest you can drive is 60km, the long range tank is very useful as we never have to worry about refuelling, depending on how much towing and sand driving we do, we can probably get two months out of a full tank (although given that fuel here is only 98.1 cents a litre at the moment it doesn't really matter).

I have never regret spending the money on the second fuel tank and putting the spare wheel on a rack
Yes not cheap but 196LTR no fuel hassles and don't have to crawl in the mud to get the spare wheel out.

Too true William Foster, it does depend on usage. I find when towing 500km is about when I need to refuel and it also coincides with the need for a food and wee break so I keep the jerries full in case I get to a place where I can't refuel. I think flexibility is the biggest consideration and as I don't go to remote places it's hard to justify the cost of the LR tank. When I'm not towing I get more like 800ks + from a tank so although I see the benefits of filling when the fuel is cheap, it's not really beneficial for me. Trip planning is important and knowing where the next pitstop is really pays off.
