Tyres out of round?

Postby BCH on Sat, 22 Sep 2012 6:18 +0000

I had 4x BFG 31x10.5 15 ATs installed 5 years ago. They have done about 35k each of fairly easy 4wd life so far (mostly on beach sand). During a balance & align session last week, a well trusted 4wd tyre specialist in Midland tells me two tyres have gone out of round, which could suggest tread separation. Anyone else suffered this with BFGs (or anything else)? I am wondering what to go to next. The local Diffens is pushing Hankook and Maxxis. I haven't heard much of either.

what did the BFG's cost you a corner? 16's?

Look at maybe MT ATZ 4ribs or Coopers ST Maxx?

What is the life length of tyres now days? I remember someone telling me in Darwin that they are done and dusted in 8 years! In have and old set on my Valiant and they're still as good as they were 7 years ago when I got them second hand.

I had similar problems with BFG. Changed to yokohama 275/70/16, $285 per corner, never had a problem since. 85,000Km and about 60% worn in 2 years. Very happy with them.

I have had the same problem with my 1 year old 265/75R16 BFG AT KO2's does anyone have an idea what would cause them to go "out of round"?

I had the old KO’s and loved them, haven’t had a set of KO2’s yet to compare but the few I’ve seen through the shop appear to wear a bit sh#%.

i had a set of old KO's on my 80 series they served me for more than 120,000kms and were probably the best tyres i ever used just a bit perplexed as to why a tyre would lose shape

Tyres have a lifetime warranty, they can tell by the depth of the tread how much work they have done and should do a pro rata claim if there is no sign of abuse like running under inflated on bitumen after coming off the sand.

I had 2 front tyres of a cheap brand fitted to the front of my previous vehicle and one went out of shape and the dealer couldn't buy them any more and as they were on the front meant I needed 2 matching tyres.
Dealer didn't want to cough up for two so went down the line of seeing they had done 11k and didn't get rotated at 10k they were no longer covered by warranty. They also sent me away on a faulty tyre without even offering to fit the spare for me which is a violation of their duty of care responsibilities.

After having explained to him that if I went next door to his competitor for a couple of tyres and paid full price and then told him the step by step procedure of taking a business through small claims that he would end up paying for my tyres and down time for the work vehicle.

We came to an agreement very quickly after that.

His competitor did very well out of it, I have since bought many thousands of dollars worth of tyres there.

So BFG have responded to my email (rather quickly I think) they have called me to arrange a time and place to meet them to have the vehicle and tyres inspected for a possible warranty claim. So far I am very impressed with how they have responded.

We shall see how it goes on Thursday

If same one gets killed and it is the falt of the tyre going it is a big pay out.
If you go back a few years ago there was a big deal with Firestone and a world wind recall after people we're killed in the states with tyres blowing.

I've got a set of old KOs on the 80, too. They would have 100,000km on them and still legal. But the KO2s on the Hilux are gone with 60,000 on them. Blew one out, too, which I've never done before. So I'm going to a different brand. Probably Hankook at this stage.

*update*

BFG/Michelin came and inspected my tyres and had a good chat and could not find anything wrong with the tyres, they suggested that I take it to a tyre shop that has a "road force balancer" $140 later problem solved.

probably the most expensive tyre balance I have ever encountered but it is smooth driving now... just glad I don't have to replace the ball joints and such.
