RHF noise when steering

Postby boggedtom on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 7:26 +0000

This noise only happens once every couple of days, ususally morning only from the rhf wheel backing out of the driveway.
It has the metallic scraping/grinding sound of a very bad uni joint.
It is a rotational noise and happens faster than wheel speed, possibly tailshaft speed.
The tailshaft has no play and is well greased.
It is only noticable when steering either direction.
It goes away quickly, i cant hear it at the round about 200m from my house.
It does it backward and forward.
It can be felt throug the steering.
It does not sound like a normal cv noise but anythings possible.

Now, i'm a mechanic with 15 years experiance and if someone came to me describing something like this i'd be left scratching my head, considering tying myself to the bull bar so i can listen with my stethescope while the lux is rolled backward and forward.

Any ideas?

Cheers Tombo

does it make the noise when not moving just turning the wheel. eg in the rack itself

Hi Steve,

No noise when turning the steering alone, it is directly related to speed but only shows up briefly when steering usually in revese, didn't do it today, front wheels coming off on the weekend.

Cheers

Could you put it on hoist/stands and turn the wheels etc?

Found it, i pulled off wheel, caliper and disk and found loose hub bolts
One was all the way out and was hitting the backs of the wheel studs, none of the others were tight enough either :?

I've found out that the noise is normal on 2011+ hilux sr5's, its the new tcs and stability control system, it makes a test noise when you first start the car and also when it is active. Can't believe I went to 3 toyota dealers and all of them didn't know and actually took apart the steering rack to have a look.... I'm not sure if the previous models had them, as I never had it on my old hilux.

Had a similar sound but it was the plastic wheel liner hitting the tyre. Only in reverse when dropping off a gutter at full lock. Put a new screw in the liner and presto! All fixed.
