Tonneau Soft Cover

Postby simelliott on Tue, 28 Aug 2012 11:12 +0000

Hi Guys, I've just ordered a 2012 SR5 (my first hilux) and hopefully you can help me out here...

I'm looking for a soft tonneau cover, but don't like the genuine toyota ones that require drilling holes in the bodywork... do any aftermarket companies offer anything that will fit with a plastic ute liner? I'm sure there must be some out there, just haven't managed to find any on my google searching.. any ideas?

Thanks

Hi,

Check with Toyota. The new 2012 hilux now has a new style genuine softcover as an option.

It does not use tie downs but uses a channel system around the edges so that the cover just clips in on the edge. It is fine fitted with the spray in liner so I'd say it should fit with the plastic liner.

The cover also has pre cut holes to fit around the SR5 chrome bars. Looks way better than the hole drill option.

A guy has that design on his ute at work, its a custom one he got made.
has the hard edge that clips over the base on the top of the tub and Just inside the lip he has the black elastic runing around the inner with little clips that clip to the plastic lip if the tonneau needs to be raised so it has a clean finish and is still useful, have a look at a commodore with a factory tonneau he said thats where he got the idea from

Thanks for your reply guys...

The salesman at Toyota told me that the new soft cover doesn't fit with the sports bar or the plastic liner? Maybe I'll double check with a different salesman!

I'm only using the hilux to carry a dirtbike at weekends, and just want a cover for the week in case I'm carrying stuff I don't want to be seen... so i don't think the comment about the height will really be relevant.. but thanks anyway!

And I'll check the commodores to see what they do, I can't say i've got much experience with these liners but I'm sure after seeing some examples I'll get a better idea!

Cheers guys.

Ah awesome thanks for that.. You obviously don't have a tub liner, but how do the rails fix to the bodywork? Are they screwed?

I do have the tub liner. It has been trimmed to allow the tonneau cover.

The ally sections are riveted on.

Ah ok, was that fitted by Toyota or by yourself? So if it's riveted, in theory it would be possible to keep the plastic liner with the lip over the edge, and rivet through that and the bodywork at the same time? Ideally I want to keep the lip so that when you sit on the edge etc it won't scratch the bodywork...

This is the soft tonneau I bought ($380 delivered)

NO DRILLING
YOU CAN OPEN TAILGATE WITHOUT TOUCHING TONNEAU
YOU CAN ROLL UP TONNEAU TO GET FULL ACCESS TO TUB

Thanks unclebob... if it doesn't require drilling, how does it attach to the tub? It looks from the pics that it attaches underneath the lip of the side rails? I'll have a plastic liner (with a lip over the top) so if that's the case it will not work...

From my experience with tub liners the lip will scratch your paint it did on my factory fitted tub liner so now it in gone.

I didn't think about that, done a bit of research and it appears you're not the only one who says that! I guess in that case my best option would be to get a cover similar to the guys who've put the pictures up, then get the tray sprayed with rhino lining/speedliner...

I had my SR5 tub sprayed with Rhino Lining. It is the first car I have had done with it, and it is the best investment on the SR5 so far. I have literally thrown bricks, firewood, steel, scrap rims (heavily damaged ones) in the back, still good as gold. Although I would offer the following advice:

1) Do your research with the people who apply it, ask questions
2) It WILL NOT stick to alloys. Steel application only.

Hope this helps.

Does anyone know if the new genuine soft cover pictured above will fit an older SR5? I have an '06 that has the old style sports bar without the kink. So really the question is have the sports bars or tray dimensions changed for the latest model SR5?
