Kalgoorlie Region Yabbie Hunt

Postby bigmagskip on Mon, 18 Jun 2012 10:29 +0000

Hi fellas,

Not sure if this topic has been explored on here before but thought I'd ask the various Kalgoorlie Lux owners what there experience is with yabbie hunting in this region.

Had an epic fail out north of Coolgardie in what I thought was very crustaeany waters, soaked the traps all night with no reward.

Is there a season when the yabbies are on the chew?? Do they go quiet during these cooler months?? I know its unlikely that anyone will give away their secret producing spots but give me some pointers. Does anyone trap in the old pits or are these likely to be full of unfriendly heavy metals etc??

I'm quite enjoying just getting lost out bush and stumbling upon waterholes. Also best baits?? I heard that yabbies are actually vegetarian and will only tear at meat to break it up so that it will break down quicker in the water and be less polluting!! Not sure if this is wank??!!! I went with chook pellets last night which might have been a mistake.

Anyway throw some thoughts up. I'm also keen to get amongst a bit of random prospecting, guess I'm just trying to keep myself busy in the desert so I don't miss the beach too much.

Cheers.

Blue Dam just out of Kal - but wait till it gets warm. We use scrappy lamb chops or roo meat - tie wire to net.

Yabbies are not vegetarian (herbivores) they are omnivores. Pilchards brings them on like a disco biscuit up the bum or Cat food near as good. They have the ability to eat each other so that discards the vegie theory. DONT USE SOAP IN DAMS. The station owner may use your forehead as target practice if he catches you. Some soap can leve a film on top of the water and live stock may not drink from the dam.
