replacement / Spare key and programing

Postby gjkirby on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 7:41 +0000

Gday all,
Im new to this forum and wanted to share this with you, not sure if im posting in the correct place so please feel free to point me in the right direction.

I recently purchased an 06 diesel hilux that only came with one key. After a ludicrous quote from Toyota for a spare key with remote, i naturally looked at other options, i found this on ebay:

anyway, I took a chance on it, turns out luck was on my side... it worked!
This is how i programed it, it looks more complicated than it is, and if you follow the instructions i cant see why it wouldn't work for you as well.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To program the remote on the key to the car so you can Lock/Unklock, follow these steps:

Start with the key out of the ignition. Open the driver door (all other
doors are closed). Driver door is unlocked (other doors don’t matter).
1.
Perform these 2. steps within 5 seconds
a. Insert the key into the ignition (don’t turn it) Pull key out
b. Insert the key into the ignition (don’t turn it) Pull key out
3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds
a. Close, then open the drivers door.
b. Close, then open the drivers door.
c. Insert the key into the ignition (don’t turn it) and pull it out.
4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds
a. Close, then open the drivers door.
b. Close, then open the drivers door.
c. Insert the key into the ignition and leave in the ignition.
Close the drivers door
Turn the ignition to ON (as far as you can go without cranking the
engine), then back to off once (this enters add mode)
d.
e. Remove the key from the ignition.

5.
Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock then unlock
automatically indicating successful entry into programming mode.
Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds
Press the lock and unlock buttons on the transmitter
simultaneously for 1.5 seconds
a.
Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, press
the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds,
the door locks should lock then unlock once indicating successful
programming. If the door locks cycle twice, repeat steps 6
as the remote was not accepted.

7. Open drivers door
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Registration of additional key (adding the key to the ECU so car will start)

1. Ensure doors are closed and no key is inserted in secto the ignition key cylinder.

2. Insert the already registered master key into the ignition key cylinder.

3. Remove and insert the master key 4 times.

4. Open and Close the driver's door 6 times.

5. Remove the master key.

Step 3~5 must be done within 35 sec.

6. Insert the key to be registered into the ignition key cylinder within 10 sec.

7. Leave key in ignition After 60 sec, the key is registered.

I did this method fairly quickly and it worked fine on the second go, i now have three working keys.

Hope this info can save someone some money, not worth the risk owning one key when you can get a working key with remote for $65 delivered.

No worries, its really not that big of a ritual considering the safety net of having a spare key

Programming the central locking buttons worked but cant seem to program this transponder chip in, i tried a different way i found and the security light goes on but as soon as i insert the new key it just starts flashing like normal if that makes sence

I have an 05 KUN26R sr5 dual cab.

I have programmed a transponder key on this hilux before but this one just doesnt seem to wanna work as if its the wrong transponder chip...

Cheers Darren

Gday Evereyone

I got my key & tried this many times today, but no luck :(
Then i realised i had the key in the igntion beeper removed & thought if the car does'nt know the keys in it, then it probably won't program the new key. Seems obvious i spose.
And then the weather moved in & it started to rain, so i will give it a go next weekebd & let you know how it goes.

Cheers
Steve

try the plugging the beeper back in that could be the drama, ive programmed another key since and it took a few goes to get it but it orked, i really should have made a video of it and post it. maybe its something ill look into doing if people are having dramas.
Dazza609 i cant imagine the o5 would be different to the 06 but i cant be certain, might have to check with a dealer. would it be possible you may have gotten a faulty chip, just a thought? ive bought two keys now both worked fine, if you get real stuck i could always order another and film the process for you.

I'm thinking about buying one of these and having a crack with my 2010 model. For fifty odd bucks it's worth a shot. Better than paying the crueling prices set by Toyota. Where do they come up with $395 or $500? You blokes must be ordering the 24 carat diamond encrusted keys. I just want a black plastic one with the bit of metal sticking out the end. :)

Daz you've got the key and the remote which is the expensive part. Any decent mechanic with a high end diagnostic computer or scan tool should be able to match the chip to the car for under $50, it only takes 10mins and you'd still be way ahead if you had bought from Toyota. i think you'd have to be pretty unlucky to get a dud chip, good luck mate

Tried mine today, the central locking works but it doesn't recognise the key. It won't start it.
Had about 8 goes at it each time the locks went on then off. Seems some of these keys could be duds.

The other tool you can try is the one listed below. For $30ish you can program keys into the security module. This is how the pricks are stealing all the hilux's. They drill the barrel, place any old hilux key in the key hole and program. Presto in under 30 seconds they have your car started. I found this out by experience when they attempted to steal my hilux. For those of you who have the 2010 SR5 with the blank on the passengers side handle instead of the door lock key hole, all they do is drill a 10mm hole (its only plastic) flat blade screwdriver and turn. A little to easy, I have put a stainless steal 10mm panel in behind mine now. Good luck drilling that out quietly.

The other thing I have done is install my own 4 point immobilizer so now they can program keys as much as they like the vehicle will not start. To reduce the price of the keys all I use now is the immobiliser remote to lock and unlock as well as disarming the immobiliser, then I just use the Toyota keys without the remotes.

Just though I would share.
