im looking for some where to 4wd / camp at new years. not to crowded and north of sydney if it is exsists?

Hey Dibbsy, you have plenty of options North Of Sydney.
The Watagans, Barrington Tops and Coffs Harbour just to name a few. Don't forget all the beach driving you have north of the city as well.
I suggest you have a look at the boiling billy books
They have plenty of treks and camping spots.

If you go up to Barrington tops via the Dungog way, it's nice but expect it to be crowded. Telegherry camping spot; (over the back on the other side of the creek crossing) isn't too bad, I have camped there.

Coffs Harbour will give you a bit of everything. Sand, creek crossings, mud and ruts!!! Check out the 4WD Drive monthly dvd on Coffs. The 4wheeling is excellent. There is an awesome camp ground at Pebbly Beach in Yuraygir National Park
