Mate of mine recently did the Grasstree mod on a boys trip.

Carton of piss: $50
Completely restyled Hilux bodywork as a result of drunk bushbashing: Priceless!

I'm trying to find this thread to show a mate. Can someone link me up please? It's for a tub where you trim into the number plate section.

Fuel tank hanger was holding on by half a rivet and had a significant tear.
P1030225.JPG

Fixed up with:
$15 of 3mm aluminium
A small strip of galvanised steel strap I had in the shed
half a dozen rivets
4 25mm x 6 stainless steel button head bolts, SS nyloc nuts and washers
Left over paint

No fancy tools needed - just start wailing on that sheet with a hammer

Step drill and file holes ... before attaching to guard

Cut excess thread of bolts

A squirt of rust kill for the strap edges

Job done

Hayman Reece make a bar for luxes that don't have the rear step. Toyota bar is one size fits all. H/R is much neater and way better departure angle. Receiver throat is shorter and same height as the main cross bar.

Too late for your mate, but worth knowing :D .

You have the original fuel tank bash plate.. they replaced those 'low' front sided ones with a 'high' front side version from 2007+.. best fix for that problem you had is to ring around places that install the longrange tanks or just ask on here, as people throw the 'better' versions away all the time.. and they prevent the problem you've got altogether..

Thanks Steve - This is off a June 2007 build. Guess it just missed out on the high front models. Good info for other members. It will save time fabbing this mod if they can get their hands on a freebie.
Its very difficult getting any thing for free in a remote area however - would have cost me well in excess of $50 to get something that size delivered.
Anyway - no problem now and probably stronger scuff/skid resilience than the new version.

I've mounted mine there to. Bit of a pain as u need to separate part of the dash to get to the retaining screws for the ashtray. Once you've done that gives you more room. You need to remove the stereo surround which differs depending on the year model

Brilliant idea. I just need to get more internal support beams for my canopy first.
