The REAL "How many kms on your Hilux" thread

Postby Someguy on Sun, 10 Jul 2016 6:46 +0000

I love the idea of the other threads attempting to give real information on the Lux's reliability, but it makes no sense people just posting how many kms they've done with little to no other information. Sure, there are trucks that have clocked over but do you think they haven't had faults along the way? What I (and most others) would like to know is: How many kms, and what mandatory (as in broken parts) maintenance did you have to do, when

I had an FZJ80 Toyota prior to the Lux, bought it at 150kms and have 2x pages of stuff it needed. I'm basically a Mechanic now. The final straw for me was when I couldn't get a factory Denso alt replacement (they don't offer that part any longer) and had no choice but to go afternarket. The aftermarkets lasted 2 months each and couldn't do that every 8 weeks naturally so it's gone. My Hilux is a late 2011 auto TD model bought at 100k I've only done another 8k in it and there are no problems I can see popping up. The engine is still surprisingly clean for 100k compared to many. It tows a trailer 99% of the time for work by the way and tows 100% on the 80 series. That thing had so little compression towing just an empty trailer was tough..

110,000 Starter motor, out of warranty claim - small cost to me

140,000 water pump and timing belt
230,000 Injectors
Tow 6m boat most w/ends thru. summer and large wood trailer during winter. A few off road trips nothing major. one trip to the cape in 2010 OTT etc with camper trailer in-tow 5 weeks 9,000Kms

Late 2006 dual cab diesel (with EGR cooler)
Was a company car with my employer at the time, already had 179K on the clock, mostly highway driving interstate and country. Before I bought it, water pump replaced.
After I bought it, replaced knackered injectors at 186k and SCV a bit later.
Every time I need tyres I look on Gumtree and find a set of brand new ones someone has sitting in the shed after replacing them with big ones. Put a new set of front rotors in a few weeks ago, badly needed. Probably could have had them skimmed but didn't bother.
Has 260K now and still stock standard and runs as sweet as a nut. Best car I ever owned hands down. If it disintegrated into a pile of dust tomorrow I couldn't complain. Doesn't do much off-road with me apart from some beach work.
Regards Chris.

I started life with nothing, and I've still got most of it left

1999 2.7 litre petrol 241,000 km arb kaymar bull and rear bars, long range tank, canopy for nearly all those km's. On time servicing mostly at dealerships.

Got it at 30,000km

Problems (nothing really):
- 2 split CV boots left and right,
- the cassette player just lost its backlighting last week so I guess I'll have to get a replacement radio.
- a polyethylene bush? put in
- needs to have original shocks replaced

Did an 8 month outback stick to only dirt roads unless no other choice trip, but it is mostly a city car. I love it!

Have traded in now, but had a 2012 SR 3.0TD with 60,000K.
- 2nd/3rd synchro @ about 55K, replaced under warranty.
- Starter packed it in after getting wet (not blaming Toyota for that one :D )

01/11 build. currently at 118k. LOTS of offroad trips, including many river crossings

original alternator replaced at 110k
original starter being replaced this week as it has seized
steering rack replaced at around 100k. I blame 33's and wider offset
front diff seals (cv shaft) replaced around 100k. wear+tear

All in all, the vehicle has been VERY reliable considering the punishment

2005 (late 2005) SR5 dual cab manual. 360,000kms
150,000 Cambelt/water pump as scheduled
188,000kms injectors
300,00kms Cambelt/water pump and seals as scheduled
On 360,000kms now and thinking might need some new injectors..

Tow 1.6tonne trailer now and then and plenty of car transport trailer work.
Checked the EGR pipe last night and very light soot, never cleaned out before

Never had any issues or break downs

2007 sr5 duel cab auto D4D

Brought at 180,000kms stock standard
Added usual things bull bar wheels lights etc

Now at 225,000kms and going spot on.
Replaced the original battery at 200,000.
Had injector seal and spiral cable recall done.
Have also blocked egr and added a hpd catch can.

Now looking at getting a lift because the front has sagged badly since the bar went on. (Original shocks)

Absolutely love it and can depend on it.
