Thought i might give this a bump and a try

Been told numerous times to run 2 stroke oil in my diesel. Anyone still doing so

It's interesting to note that a couple of people reported smoother idling of a cold motor.

This is a definite sign of better lubricity and therefore less wear.

If this is really happening you would certainly getting better wear when warm as well, you just wouldn't feel it as much as when cold.

But then some said to use synthetic and others said mineral, would it matter?

I've got a long range tank, and if it was just a case of throwing one of those little bottles of 2 stroke mower oil in there I'd be all for it.

Is there a cheap brand readily available at the servo that could be the standard additive for D4D drivers I wonder.

Yes seen different people say fully synth and some say normal cheap two stroke, i'm of the same opinion as yourself if it helps lubrication it should matter what two stroke you put in!!]

To me it sounds very likely that there's a benefit to this.

No one's making fantastic claims of "40% more power" or anything like that, just better cold starts.

A common complaint with our D4D's is the cold start rattle, and you could expect that a fair bit of wear is happening then.

Do we have anyone who knows enough about 2ST oils to tell us what would be a suitable common garden variety oil to use?

I rarely buy the stuff but had to get a little bottle for the whipper snipper the other day.

I've got a 200ml bottle of "Castrol 2T self mix" sitting on the table now, it cost bugger all.

At 200:1, my 140L tank of fuel would need 700ml (I think).

So every time I filled from empty I could just throw 3 of these little bottles in (or pour from a larger bottle), it's not too difficult.

Who can clarify the mineral/synthetic issue?

These guys seem to be recommending mineral (Castrol Activ 2T) over synthetic.

At 200:1 I can't see any real harm in it, I'll give it a go.

During my searching on this topic I found there's another "bluehilux" out there on the 4WD action forum. He's not me.

yeah mineral oil like castrol 2t is the way to go. The mineral oil stays mixed with the diesel as the semi syn's and full syn's seperate from the diesel when sitting. Ive been putting it in my 07 lux since i got the injectors done which was about 2000K's ago. Cant comment on how it was before the 2t cause the old injectors were stuffed and rattling like crazy. It only takes an extra 2 minutes at the bowser to pour 375mls per 75 litres so im gunna keep using it as a cheap insurance. I did run it in me old 5l 3.0 diesel hilux and made a big difference to noise and made it run a little smoother too

Nice one  or maybe "greyhilux" which is more accurate.

Well I actually did it, and put 700ml of Castrol Activ 2T in my 140L tank.

I was too scared to do it to my brand new ute, but had the old 06 (now at 318,000km) this week and decided it was the lab rat.

I should point out that it rattles like an absolute bastard despite being into Toyota twice for valve clearances. I totally doubt they did them properly if even at all.

There's not a defined difference other than I could say that it's a little smoother and quieter.

Tomorrow I have to take it for a 400km trip pulling a heavy trailer and it's bloody hot up here at the moment.

I figured I'd take my chances with the 2T oil as she's getting a bit old for that kind of treatment and any extra lubrication is welcome.

Steve9R wrote:i know a few people doing it in the current model lux as well, they reckon it has solved the cold rattles altogether .. make sure you use the synthetic 2 stroke oil though.. 1ltr per 200ltrs is about right.. so in a normal tank, thats about 150-200ml per tank full..

Steve

I Hope this is true, cold rattles almost bring me to tears in the morning. I would to hear if anyone has tried it

Threw in 375 mill of castrol active 2t and filled with caltex and drove about half an hour to westfield shopping centre and noticed my cars a hell of alot smoother and quiet. Next morning will be the test but other then that no notice in response, power, fuel econ or struggles. She still boosts and pulls as hard as it did before and the turbo whistles still loud so I assume everything is groovey.

I was a skeptic and still am a little but the difference it made to my engine was awesome. Even my mrs in the passenger seat said to me it seems quiet and smoother then it was so obviously made a difference. Will report back after a overnight morning start.

My vnt 2kd-ftv was doing 9km/L
After pouring 300ml of 2t to my tank(full)
It improve to 11km/L

Ive proven this many many times..

Just use any cheap 2t it doesnt have to be expensive.. As long as its rated JASO FB or JASO FC

I ran 2stroke oil in my fuel for a few weeks at the start of winter. I just used nulon mineral 2stroke oil from supercheap. I have read that the synthetic oil is no good as it doesn't burn properly.
Mixed it at 200:1 fuel:oil. So that 365ml in the 1st full 73l tank and after that you have to calculate it by how many litre of fuel you put in, because you will never put in a full 73l again.
It defiantly stopped a lot of the cold rattle and didn't effect the engine at all.
However I don't run the 2 stroke oil anymore as I found that I am getting the same effect, of stopping a lot of the cold rattles, by running only caltex vortex diesel. It's a little more expensive then standard diesel, but works out about the same as adding 2stroke.
