2010 Hilux sudden loss of power

Postby Shakeandbake on Mon, 26 Sep 2022 7:44 +0000

Hi All,

Was driving home tonight in my 2010 Hilux and lost power and engine light came on 100kms from home. It's currently on a tow truck and im in an Uber.

I was thinking blown turbo. Only has 110,000kms so im not even sure if that's what it could be. It still starts and runs fine but will only rev just above 2000rpm. I cant hear the turbo spooling.

Any help and ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like the computer has gone into "Safe Mode" for some reason. It'll allow you to go at snails pace to get somewhere safe, but that's it. Once someone with a computer interface thingy can look at it you'll have an idea of why it's gone into safe mode.

<EDIT> I just read my "Highly Technical" response here, please don't laugh too loud guys. :) ;) :)

That's ok Rob, nobody reads your posts anyway  ;)
BTW this is a doubled up thread.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Update.

Had a quote from Cornells in Melbourne to replace almost everything related to the Turbo for $7500.

I bought a new turbo actuator thinking that was the problem. It was part of the problem. It had completely seized.
The other part of the problem was the turbo veins had completely seized. Replaced the turbo and stepper motor and all seems okay so far. I was also told to replace the injector seats as apart of replacing the turbo so that's the next job.

Not much carbon build up in the turbo or exhaust manifold so not sure why it failed the way it did.
