I know this has been talked about before but i need a solution.
My hand brake is stuffed within 2 weeks of being tightened.
Toyota want to change the cable but i don't think it will fix the problem and my car is out of warranty.
My driveway is very steep and if i don't leave the car in gear it will roll down the hill.
HELP what should i do to fix it once and for all. How much should it cost...

When you find a solution , you had better let us all know .
if it takes 2 weeks for your HB to bugger up after adjusting , its one of the good ones .

Id agree with above. Ive accepted its shit and always leave it in gear. Sometimes on really steep hills I have to put it in low range too.

Get some new shoes, or deglaze them adjust them up a bit, clean and adjust after offroad, it takes extra maintenance when used offroad and wet. Deglaze drums,
A cable probably won't fix it, needs cable adjustment and good adjustment at shoes.

as slowlux says , i have a safety stop (platetronic) machine at work. we can run a car over and see the brake performance on individual wheels, showing brake and handbrake differences between l and r and also the proportioning (great for lifted luxes in need of lspv adjustments)

have had a couple of hiluxs with issues.. new shoes and adjusted up and still no good. machined drums and only slightly better. the last one we put new drums and shoes - went for a roadtest and then retested it and it passed

Did you use Toyota Drums and shoes , it would be interesting to see if it still passes after it has done a few K's , my guess is it will not

Youve only got 2 options that I know of 1st have a read of the adjustment thread and adjust regularly yourself or get a couple of bricks for your driveway to stop it rolling... it really is poor workmanship.
Wonder if Tritons / Nissans have the problem or have a better rear brake system?

Or the 3rd option, put air breaks in.
Seriusly Considering a lot of people already have compressers and tanks would it be that hard to do or would it just cost to much.

Correct me if Im wrong but I owned a truck that was fitted with air brakes and I still had to manually adjust the rear brakes as we are doing now. I thought the air is just the manner in which pressure is applied.

Surely Toyota know about this problem and there is a suitable fix for it.

I think they deny responsibilty, when I was at toyota dealership I complained about the rear brake system being unreliable they explained that its my fault due to me raising my suspension. They claim as soon as you do that it F' s the self adjustment?????? WTF

Well the way i was thinking that air would be better because they hold heavy trucks on hills and you have to leave the transmission in nuetral and brakes arnt adjusted as reguly as the hilux, so hopefully they wouldnt need to be adjusted on utes as often either

Yeah trucks get adjusted more often and air brakes would be ridiculous on a hilux.

If every other Toyota Dealer is like the one in my town , if you dare say anything negative about him precious bloody Toyota's , man dose he get the shits

the air on the braking system on a truck is more-so used to release the brakes...the booster on each side of the axles have a spring the size and spring rate of a 4wd coil spring...and thats what applies the brakes...air releases them but also triggers them

Yes, as soon as you make a modification, TOYOTA do Deny and blame those mods on any problem you have.
They don't even want to discuss it, just blame the mods.
Toyota Australia are really good at this.
My diff was mounted on an angle from factory, it broke a c/v, they just blame the suspension,
Not interested in knowing about the factory diff mount fault, which mine came with.
To add to it, because of the angle, the diff was 250ml low on oil, untill 10,000klms.
They say, the suspension is the blame, piss poor!

Well i will take it to them and see what they say.
I still have all standard except a set of 31's not much different to standard.
It was doing it way before they went on.

Has anyone here had to extend their handbrake cable?

Can you guys remember the toyota add where the ute rolls off the cliff?
Maybe be did leave the hand break on?
