Currently knocking up for a simple tray for a trailer. All designs are in my head. Have you got any photos of what you want it to look like?

75x50x2mm for the gunnels. 50x50x2mm for the cross members. Will be 2500x1900. Little bigger then a standard size but in need of it.

If your putting a canopy on it, I seriously don't see why you don't look at a good alloy tray as an option. My mates run alloy on their utes, and by alloy, I mean like 5 mm thick floored, 4 mm thick sided trays, fully tig welded construction, and they weigh in at under 100kg. They don't rattle, they don't rust, and you can legally carry a lot more weight on them. The only downside is they don't handle a flogging like steel can, but they've put theirs through the paces on farms from hay to the hunter valley, and still love them, I'm building mine from alloy and suggest you look at it seriously as an option too.

Price is a turn down for alloy. If you want a true solid alloy tray that's going to hold up the same as steel its gonna cost you. 5mm alloy sheet for the floor will cost the frame of a good steel tray. Only benefits of alloy is weight and rust, don't get me wrong 2 of the most important things. Steel is hard to go by if your gonna abuse it.

Yeah maybe, but after running a few steel trays with all the fruit, It cost me a fortune in fuel consumption. I would prefer pony up and get a good solid tray done from alloy. With a 5mm floor and 4mm sides, 3 inch headboard, and big thick channel underneath, I can't quite remember the size, 2x heavy duty alloy angled underboxes, powdercoated and a 115l poly fuel tank, it was around $6,500. I am happy enough with that to buy. I could build it, but it works out cheaper to just pay someone to do it at what my work is valued at per hour. I carry a couple of tonne in tools for a fair portion of the time on our farm, so minimising weight is important.

Tray minus extras was $3500, so bugger all between steel and alloy really. $500 is much in the grand scheme of a permanent addition. You'd save that in fuel in the first year,

This is my latest effort. The pictures are old, it now has an Old Man Emu lift kit, ROH Trojan rims, a full SR5 front end and a BSF bullbar and side rails, thats about all for the cosmetic modifications.

Its nothing too fancy as its mostly a work tray, dimensions are about 2100x1850 from memory. It has plenty of work light tabs across the top, a full length drawer, or as much as I could do (1800 long x 600 wide) and rhs boxed into the sides for some more strength. The sides are all bushed to keep noise down etc. I can still fit the spare tyre under the tray, just didn't bother to put it away after wiring everything up..

Deciding on tray colour

Postby bigluxmanning on Thu, 05 May 2016 5:22 +0000

Hi there,

I have recently purchased a 2003 V6 Hilux with a flat tray. Since then i have built uprights as well as sides for the tray and am looking to paint the tray and can't decide between the white and black. Was hoping that people could please post photos of their white or black trays to make my decision a little easier.

Thanks in advance.
