oil filter and mystery drainage ports

Hi all,
have now done three oil filter changes and after again having oil run over my floor decided to take a closer peek at where it comes from.....
From underneath the oil filter mount - there are two small outlets - one to drain the overflow oil as you undo the oil filter... and a second one slightly to the rear which I have absolutely no idea where it comes from.... anyone..?

Finally, are there supposed to be drain hoses fitted to these two ports - they certainly aren't present on my engine....

frats,
Rosco

i never get any oil spilling.. my procedure is simple.

1 / make sure engine is warm (not hot, not cold, but warm) as oil flows better when warm..
2 / undo the fumuto(drain plug if you dont have a fumuto) and drain the oil from the sump into the catch drum,
3 / lift dip stick slightly to aid with air intake and allow oil to drain faster..
4 / leave it alone for an hour or so while you kick back with a beer or two (making sure the missus knows that you cant be disturbed cause your busy servicing the truck).. check periodically (between beers) to see how much is still draining from sump
5 /once its only drippiing occasionally from sump, ill remove the oil filter, no oil comes out AT ALL.. the catch area below the filter in mine never gets oil in it, cause its all drained out..
6 / change filter, close sump plug/fumoto and refill with oil..

Sit back and have another beer.. job done.. ;)

Thanks Dan and Steve - I'll just have to do better next time - obviously, not enough attention being paid to BEER....
Steve, I do get everything hot before I drop the oil - I will try to let it drain for a while from the sump next time before removing the oil filter....
I have found that it is easy to remove the cover plate under the sump - and prevents the draining oil running all over those plates.....

Sadly, this oil change I have just done won't stay in the engine long - it is due for it's 3 year service in another 2,500 km's.... and I used RX Super!

thanks for your help...

any ideas on that other drain port on the side of the engine - mine's not connected to anything...

frats,
Rosco

One other item I know others have done is to pop a small hole in the top of the filter to aid the oil drain from it while your between beers 1 and 2....

.......but make sure you can get the oil filter loose before you pop a hole in it. ;)

Naahhhh... if you havent got one, go and buy a Fumoto (search on here for them), it replaces the sump plug with the ball valve, and has a small tap on it..

then ive got a piece of normal garden hose with a hose clamp on one end that simply pushes over the fumoto nipple and i run the hose into my drum and then open the tap.. no oil anywhere except down the hose and in the drum.. easy..

(Ohh you'll probably need an extra beer to do this too! ;))

Out of curiosity, who else uses a Fumoto drain plug?

Had mine for about 18 months before a mechanic crushed the valve onto the tap lever by dropping the engine onto the cross member when doing an engine mount change. I jumped straight onto the Fumoto website and ordered myself another one.

they are magic drain valves...one of out trucks has one and its alot better than dealing with 43litres of hot engine oil out of a 25mm hole

neither come with hoses from factory wierd cause prados and hiaces do :|
just make a hose up out of some small pvc pipe and and put it over the oil filter catch pipe and leave it their
also the other mistery drain pipe your taking about has a 10mm bolt on it ? (think thats what your talking about) sitck a hose on it and thats the coolant drain for the block

what you are looking at is most likely the engine block coolant drain.

neither drain will have a hose from factory. a bit of clear water hose from bunnings will fix that ;)
