Biggest possible diesel capacity on 2012 dual cab?

Postby Camk91 on Fri, 17 Jun 2016 3:36 +0000

Hey everyone,

I'm sick of dragging a 44gal drum everywhere I go so I'm looking at getting a bigger tank/tanks and want to know what the biggest capacity is that will fit under my ute? I've already removed my spare from under the tray and now have a pair bolted inside the tray so I've got plenty of room under there...

I think the longranger is about 127lts, the Frontier tank is about 140 something ir they do them yet. You can buy a sub tank that bolts up above your spare. Why do you need to carry so much?

Ive got a 145l long ranger under my 2012 duel cab. It goes where the stocky is so you could get a sub tank to go where you spare is as well. Brown davies make a 153l ( i think) tank to replace the stock one as well

215l is the biggest
145liter Long Ranger
+70liter dolium aux tank

I don't think you can add the dolium to the b&d tanks

I live, work, and travel in very remote places from outback NSW and QLD to North SA and soon east WA. Sometimes I don't see a servo for ages and when I do diesel can sometimes be up around $2/L. My last trip just to see mum for her birthday was over 1000km one way and I did the return trip 3 days later. If I lived in town and just wanted to do the odd trip to the Cape or something I wouldn't bother, but what I'll save in expensive (and possibly dirty) diesel will pay for the tank/s in a year or 2.

Fair enough. Maybe look at one of those large poly in-tray items that have a pump and etc built in.

I did look at the poly ones but unfortunately we get some dishonest people traveling through and it might be a bit too easy for them...

Biggest possible diesel capacity on 2012 dual cab?

Postby buffo69 on Fri, 17 Jun 2016 9:01 +0000

I have a 270 litre capacity using LRA tanks. Larger main tank at 150 litre and auxiliary tank in rear spare wheel area holds 120. The rear tank part number is TH150RA

The 70l dolium tank still allows the spair tyre to stay
And gravity feed main tank so no extra pumps or fill points

That combined with the long ranger or arb tank you should see between 1600-2500km per fill if averaging 9-13.5L/100

I've chewed through 160l before see a servo servial times and I live in a major town,
Where you make up masses of time is in no detours,
Leave at night for a trip or drive through the night and you won't no what servos will be open so when low you'll be driving into a town and losing a heap of time and money as outside of major town you pay more

It don't take much if your out bush either, for me L4 at 3-3200rpm 40-45kph is a good cruise speed and I drop 16-20l an hour
When I was on Fraser islands over Christmas for 5days I use close to 220l at 60c a litre dearer then mainland
It soon adds up and works out a heap cheaper ($130 alone on that trip) to carry a few more liters
I carry 120liters on my ln106 60liter factory and 60liter gravity feed (home made stainless steel tank)
And I have just brought a passenger side 90 liters long range so I'll have 210 liters, witch is what I'm after, a lot of mates have 180-200l and it's the perfect number to allow fill ups at good servos
If you were asking for 300+ liters I would say that's insane but around 200liters I think is a good number to carry,

FFS, just look around, you can find how much fuel you can stick under or on the tray of a hilux. If you need more than the extra tanks offered by the after market suppliers, you have to carry it in either 44's or tote tanks on the tray.

Was a good forum here, but now it seems that the members just want to see there name in lights, by asking dumb shit questions.

Boab and Dolium poly secondary tanks
Long Ranger or Brown Davis steel primary tanks

pick the combo that suits your needs. I have been known to carry 170L (128L Long Ranger and 2 jerries)
2011 Dual Cab SR5 D4D manual.

Hey Ash'y'

I actually learnt exactly what I need to do now before I go on my next long trip thanks to the replies to this question !!!

Mate your attitude stinks :)

I'm not dumb - I have no idea why you would say "dumb shit questions" - if you dont like the forum - dont read any of the posts - 'simple' so you should find that warm, fuzzy and familiar - I hope I'm not being to subtle for you

Good question and good answers, I learnt a lot. The 80L built-in tank seriously limits what you can really do with the Hilux for Au outback standards. Although it's probably more than enough in Thailand where your towns are 35km apart.
