Accelerator to floor for power boost

Hi all, I have a 1999 SR5 Dual Cab Hilux 2.7 litre petrol. It goes a bit slow up big long hills. I notice if I push the accelerator that last cm or so to the floor that there is a burst of power. Does anyone know what this is called and what it is used for? I would like to use it more often but worried it might wreck my engine if over used as I guess it is designed for added power for overtaking or getting out of emergency situations. Anyone know anything about it? Thanks

I'd imagine that would be the transmission dropping back a gear to allow you to move quicker up the hill. Should be fine to use for that purpose I reckon.

Thanks for your reply Sparksy. Sorry, I should have mentioned, I have a manual car and the gear doesn't drop down. The boost is like a richer petrol mixture gets in, the revs go up like an extra 500rpm and I feel like I am in a normal car again instead of a struggling old truck.

Ok, got the problem sorted, I had a flat spot for about 90% of the accelerator travel. Just did a 240,000 service and now it is very responsive to the throttle. They changed a very dirty fuel filter and dirty air filter and cleaned the oxygen sensor (MAF?)
