Altitude Compensater 5L

Just wondering if anyone has any info about these altitude compensaters as mine is ticking and noticed my mates 3L engine doesnt have an altitude compensater and wondering would I have any affects if I removed it?
I live at 416m above sea level but most of my driving is at sea level and travel to 1000m for 4wd trips.
