Looking for advice on second fuel filter for my ln167 5l engine. Which kit? Install Before or after the oem? How many micron? Ease of obtaining replacement filters? Anything else to consider?

Hey Whitebull. I'm looking for the same advise so will reply to your thread with the info I have found.
I just bought a 2012 hilux with a D4D, Many have told me to fit a pre-filter or new primary filter because:
1. It's a lot cheaper than fixing blocked injectors.
2. The tolerances are so fine in the new diesels it doesn't take much to block them.
3. The factory filter is a 5 micron filter which can block easily and starve the pump.
4. The factory filter isn't good a separating water which can corrode or mess your fuel system
So looks like there's a number of good reasons to fit the extra filter.

The one recommended to me is the Flashlube product. The link is below.

Wouldn't changing the filter at half the recommended interval be a simpler option?

Have a look at the Diesel Care option; I've had one installed from new. The bracket fits in really nicely like an OEM unit. Further information at http://www.dieselcare.com.au/filtration-systems

Propellerhead, if particulates were the only issue then yes, you're correct.
However the factory unit does not separate water effectively (apparently) where as the after market one does. And it has the clear bulb at the base so you know when to drain.
It comes down to what you're comfortable with and a $250 insurance policy against having to replace injectors is fine by me.

Donaldson make a good kit. Ya have to make ya own brackets but it comes with the filter body(with glass water bowl), 2 filters,some fittings and some hose I think for about $100. Biggest reason I went with it was Donaldson stuff is very widely available and easy to get.

I had a 5l-E, honestly I don't think the secondary fuel filter is neccessary, it isn't like the d4-d engine at all in my opinion, which I now own. If you want to put one in, the donaldson kit mentioned here is good for the money but doesn't have a particularly high flow rate from memory, I use them on mobile fuel trailers on our farm, and put one in a 1kz-te of my brothers, mounted it just about the tank.

The Donaldson kit I'm referring to is designed for common rail systems.

I am more inclined to agree with someone like baileys diesel group, someone who fixes the stuff ups of fuel systems.

Very true Jacko9, where I work we see a shit load of the new 4x4s(of all makes) sold in town b4 the new owners take delivery and well over half of them get a second filter fitted at the recommendation of the dealership!

As I had a Water Watch system fitted to my Navara for 9 years and it worked an absolute treat I have decided to install one in my new Hilux. It is being fitted by Ulladulla Toyota next week so will post some photos when that is done. This piece of kit is designed and built by Responsive Engineering which is a subset of Cooma Diesel I believe.

I'd get written advice from your dealer that it won't void your warranty, if it still has warranty, no matter what a 3rd party mechanic says.

If your truck is out of manufacturer warranty then do what you want I guess

Another reason as to why I'm fitting Water Watch..........it is the only device being fitted by my Toyota dealer. Water Watch is installed into the line between the tank and the OEM filter....it has no restrictions or other filters in it but is a water trap that provides greater capacity to trap and release water in the fuel than the OEM filter does.
Toyota Australia would have God own trouble if they tried to deny warranty because you had this type of extra protection fitted.

I just installed the Diesel Care option William_Foster recommended at the top of the thread.
It took about 40 minutes and all the required parts come with it for $315: Bracket, pipes, clamps, bolts the works. Even a guide to install.
I rate it highly. Good advise William thank you.

Dealerships and Toyota Australia wouldn't be game to apply that in a court room unless it's a 2 micron system.
30 micron Fuel Manager kit with the laser cut bracket is the go. Clear bowl down the bottom so you can see if you have copped the water in the fuel thing, perfect.
30 micron filter first, then to the Toyota fuel filter assembly, which is 5 micron in the KUN26 Hiluxes.
Step down.

No problems, glad it worked out for you. I love the OEM look of it compared to some on the market.
