1990 petrol hilux, a fuel problem is prevents car starting

Postby Brokenlux1990 on Sun, 11 Jan 2015 12:59 +0000

I own a 1990 two wheel drive hilux. Rn85r

Iv been having this problem for about a month
where when I turn the key it will not start unless
I give it revs, and as soon as I take my foot of the
pedal it stalls. After replacing the fuel pump and
many other things such as the dizzy cap, rotor,
leads and spark plugs, she was running okay for
a bit then died again, fixed it yesterday by taking
the air intake off and cleaning the carby. I also
installed a small fuel filter between the fuel
pump to the carby to pick up any little bits that
aren't stopped by the one at the fuel tank.
Today when I went out to go for a drive and
it had the same problem I saw into the new see
through filter that after it stall petrol will bleed
back into the pump. Filling the system with air
There for not leaving the fuel lines primed.
PLEASE HELP! I need it on the road.

fuel tank breather working? maybe try loosen or remove filler cap incase a vacuum is being created?

i would have thought on a carby engine it would drain back as you have a bowl full of fuel and the fuel pump will fire up when the engine is on.
it could be anything unfortunately. have you done a comp test? could be burnt a valve? does it run smooth when it does run are you pumping the throttle or just pressing it?
im not familiar with the hilux carby but is it squirting fuel in when you pump the throttle?
do you have an air leak? try spraying carby cleaner around intake manifold and carby base aswell as vacuum hoses to see if revs change.
is the idle jet blocked in the carby?
just a process of elimination

I have a clear filter between the fuel pump and carby and after I tried to start the car I saw through the filter and noticed air bubbles where coming from the fuel pump, I was told the lines should be primed with fuel even if the car is off. Never noticed before because I didn't have that filter.
No I have not done a pressure test but I believe it would be a smart move.
It use to run like a price of shit, until I change the plus, leads and dizzy cap which where all very old. At the moment it doesn't sounds the best when it's just started (when this problem is not happening)
To preven it from stalling I need to hold my foot on the acceleration.
Yes we have pulled the carby apart and emptied it out 3 time and it will work for a few days then die, also noticed when its running we set the fuel measurement in the slight glasss on the carby to half. When I am having this probem I can't tell if its empty or full.
I Believe I do have a air leak and will try and find it over the next few days
I was told to check the idle jet but am unsure how to.
Cheers
