Battery and water lights come on simutaneously

Battery and water lights come on simutaneously

Postby GazzaS on Sat, 21 Jun 2014 11:59 +0000

Hi everyone,
I have a 1998 ln147r with a 3.0 liter diesel engine. Within the last two days I've refilled the tank, and had a lot of rain. My Hilux is always parked outside.
On the way home in the rain the day after filling the tank, the battery and water in fuel lights would come on when I decelerated for any reason like shifting or braking. The next day they were on continuously and have remained that way.
At first I thought it must be water causing a short because I can't think of any other reason for both lights to come on simultaneously. The only other thing that occurs to me is that the unit at the base of the fuel filter is broken.

Anybody with similar experiences?

I'd check the charge rate. When the alternator fails you'll get a dash full of lights.

Ditto on the alternator fail. Haven't had it happen on the 07 Hilux but happened on my old 92 Surf. The guy who rebuilt the alternator said that the dash lights coming on was typical of alternator on the way out. When it goes completely you get all the lights as if the ignition is on but the engine is not started yet.

check the plug on the back of the alternator, used to happen on my 80 series all the time until i used a screwdriver and bent the contacts in the plug to make better contact. Common fault on the 80 series. I called it the dashboard disco.
