2003 2.7L EFI problems

Hi hilux community,
Just got a problem with my 2003 2.7L petrol hilux where it idles OK, and you can give it a rev OK, but as soon as you put it under load of any kind it has no power at all between roughly 1800rpm and 3000rpm. when the revs get higher it gets going but still misses a little bit. makes it hard to go up hills, have to sit in first gear doing about 30klms. I should note that i just bought this car and it had not been driven for twelve months. so far i have done plugs, leads, fuel filter, air filter. Please HELP!!!!!

coils?

air/fuel sensors.

bad fuel. dump it have a look for rust in the tank.

take the battery off for 24hr to reset the computer

timing?

any codes on the computer.

fuel pump

ok so i changed the coils, and the fuel is clean. just drove it again to find that full open throttle actually goes alright, even with low revs pulling up a hill. here is a scenario: trying to climb a hill in second from about 2000rpm with about 30-80% throttle causes loss of all power and forces you to change back to 1st. but if you punch it to the floor it picks up and starts to haul ass. that it a massive flat spot if you ask me!
just tested ohms on the tps switch and it seems to ramp up/down consistanty. I will disonnect the battery now and try the 24hour thing next. also the local mechanic tried to find fault codes with a snap-on scan tool and it would not communicate with the ECU :/

cleaned air mass meter with approved MAF cleaner. not even the slightest bit better.
pulling my hair out on this one!!!!

injectors?

Are the coils getting good power/charging system.?

See if you can get a air/fuel ratio metre on it to see what the engine is doing.

Remember you need air, fuel and spark.

I had a massive flatspot in my old 3RZ-FE (2.7)

I changed the leads and plugs, this helped but the flatspot was still there. Checked the timing but it was in good. Cleaned the throttlebody but no difference.
What finaly got rid of it was REPLACING the MAF meter, not just cleaning it!!

Cost around $180 from memory (non genuine). Best bang for you buck I ever got.

Have you tried replacing the fuel filter? This can help.
Also i found it ran like crap when I once put E10 in it. I always tried to run it on Premium 95 when ever a servo had it. Dont be fooled by the false economy of E10!!!

If fuel filter never been done then definitely good idea. Maybe an injector clean an like a poster just before said it can be faulty MAF even if on a scan tool it's outputting readings. Fuel filter cheap and easy DIY But if still no success take to or call a mobile EFI specialist prob won't cost much more than $100 for diagnosis and a good tech will find the problem pretty quickly

I have a similar problem with my 4x2. Same engine but it is only noticeable at higher speeds but not as bad as you have experienced. Never bad enough for me to care to fix it as I do FIFO work so never gets driven.

I have very similar symptoms to what you've described in my 2002 Hilux with a 3RZ-FE engine. It has 128xxx km. Have replaced oil, filter, fuel filter, air filter, installed extractors and upgraded exhaust system and it seems to still be getting steadily worse.

As I drive it everyday to get to work I cannot afford to send away my injectors for refurb/flow testing etc. so have bought a set of re-manufactured injectors. Injectors seems like the most probably cause to me. I will try checking out the MAF, will keep you posted if I fix it.

Also if the new injectors are ok I will get my current injectors restored and tested and put them up for sale with documents/receipts from the refurbishment. Hoping to recover some of the cost of the re-manufactured injectors ($345).

Where did you get the new MAF meter from?

But id start with any of the auto parts suppliers in your area, and if they couldn't get one, they would know who could

Unscrewed my maf sensor and thoroughly sprayed with contact cleaner, large flat metal plate and electrical connectors, and problem is probably about 70% better.

Was talking to someone who told me injectors really need to be changed every 120k km and that this model hilux in particular has very troublesome injectors. Am changing out injectors now. My lux has 127xxx km..

beleive it or not but this problem is still not fixed. car has sat on the lawn for nearly 12 months but just recently got working on it again.

UPDATE: head has been taken off and reconditioned, purchased a full VRS gasket kit and was very fussy installing the head back to the car. The reason i did the head is because it was using water somewhere not visible so i figured head gasket. plus this now eliminates a burnt valve or anything head related.

Car runs exactly the same as before. did run pretty rough at first but i believe this was due to the hydraulic lifters getting oil back in them again and took a good 20min high idle to prime up. Its now purring like a kitten on idle. (which it did prior to the head coming off anyway)

The only thing different is that i now have fault code 52. I thought this may have risen from the initial rough start-up so after i got the car idling smoothly i cleared the code to start fresh.

Sitting at idle there were no fault codes, but this time as soon as i try and drive it or put it under load the code 52 comes straight back. I believe its a knock sensor fault.

Strange that this code is coming up now and didnt before. it was not touched during the head works apart from un-plugging it. and yes i did plug it back in.

Come on fellow hilux community, your time to shine! do my original symptoms line up with a faulty knock sensor? i have gotten prices and for some reason they are bloody expensive. thinking of trying a second hand one just to see what happens.'

Just fixed this exact issue
Throttle position sensor, on the opposite side if the intake where the cable connects. About $100
