Strainer "sock" in tank pickup

Hi All,

I'm ordering my second (first was an 06) new common rail Hilux, and want to take some steps to protect the fuel system.

I'd like to install the 30mic Stanadyne/Terrain Tamer water separator setup upstream of the standard filter, and remove the strainer sock from the tank as it gave trouble on our first one.

Can this be done?

On the old girl I get the dealer to remove and clean that strainer every 50,000 k's, but I'd prefer to change a prefilter in the engine bay myself instead.

Can anyone offer some experience/advice?

Cheers,

My only worry would be if you get crap going through the fuel pump in the tank it might cause trouble. No experience with this though.

Cheers,

Chris.

Yeah strainer is there to protect the pump from debris. Wouldn't recommend removing it..

OK,

But the strainer is upstream of the standard fuel filter and injector pump isn't it, and then the pump is after the filter?

What I'm talking about is removing the strainer in the tank, THEN installing the 30mic water separator filter upstream of the standard fuel filter (which is 2 mic I think).

The idea being that instead of a strainer in the tank I cant get to easily, I have an aftermarket full flow filter (with water separator) in the engine bay that I can change every 10k.

Or are you referring to a fuel transfer pump in the tank (does it have one?)?

I was referring to the fuel supply pump in the tank, but after seeing yours is pre 05, non common rail, it won't have supply pump.

Actually mate, I screwed up there and posted in the wrong place.

I'm talking about my new 2012 model when I receive it.

Can this post be moved? (sorry).

Ok well then yeah the filter sock will be attached to the supply pump inside the tank. That sock is there to protect that pump. The fuel filter in the engine bay saves the injector pump and injectors.

That explains it clearly, cheers

Hey guys
How often should the intank sock be checked?

Do I have to drop the tank to check/remove this??

I just changed one in a 60 series cruiser that was absolutly choked- i didnt think it would even have one being a none electric fuel pump!

cheers

I reckon most people have prob never checked their pickup screen.

I certainly haven't, and I'm at 95k. that said, when I hit 100k, I'll be doing an epic service on the beastie.

and yes, you do have to drop the tank

I may be missing something here but I don't believe the common rail diesel has a fuel pump in the tank. There is defiantly a high pressure pump after the filter and driven by the engine but I see no evidence of a feed pump in the tank.

The petrol may be a different story. Happy to be corrected.

When I swapped my old tank over there wasn't a pump in the tank - just the primer attached to the factory fuel filter in the engine bay.
I believe the v6 models would probably have an intank pump.

I would still leave the pickup filter there though, it does gunk up eventually but better the gunk mostly stopped there instead of in your lines. It would take a fair while for the gunk to become an issue (depending on location/quality of fuel) but certainly wouldn't need servicing as often as the main filters.
I cleaned mine with a bit of kero/compressed air and throwing it in the washing machine lol.
