injector rattles and $$ quotes

Postby obiee on Thu, 26 Jul 2012 8:42 +0000

hi all
first of all i would like to say what a great forum
secondly this is my first post so exscuse me if im in wrong area
now my problem
as this has been discussed numerous times on this forum i have a problem with yes my injectors
i have a 2007 hilux dualcab d4d and yes i have the DEATH RATTLES.
i have had a good read through the forum of others problems and thoughts on this matter.
mine does the usual things rattles its head off when first started when cold then goes away
after engine comes up to temp. it also has a rattle around 80km/h and 100/km/h but not as
bad then when it is cold.
I have decided to put in new injectors and spoke to a couple of diesel injector specialists today and one
mob who have done quiet a few of them quoted me $3400 to do job
second place said $2000 to do them but he has never done them before.
can anyone tell me who has had it done do you have to fit new fuel rail etc or is it as easy (so to speak) as
new injectors and then them putting the injector codes to ecu.
$1400 is a big difference between jobs and should i pay the $3400 to someone who has done them
or save $1400 and go with other bloke.
im on far north coast nsw and if anyone can recommend anyone in this area i would be glad
to speak with them.
thanks guys any comments etc would be appreciated.

before paying anything. Try toyota first if you have your vehicle serviced regularly. My 2007 SR got a similar problem and the dealer in Mt Isa replaced all four injectors for free even its warranty expired. But that was done in late 2010, 6 months after expiry of warranty. The dealer said toyota acknowledges that 5-6% of diesel hiluxes are affected and they will replace the injectors on a case by case basis. I think it depneds on the milage and service record.

rang the same mechanic today (by accident as i was ringing around for quotes) that quoted me $3400 and spoke to the owner and he gave me a quote for $2550 out the door (injectors, labour, coding etc) he said there are 6 different types of injectors just for the 07 model (he is a bosch dearler) big difference from $3400.

i was told by one mechanic that the rattle comes from the injectors leaking letting fuel through thus prematuarly igniting the cylinder and over a while can cause burnt out pistons, extra fuel usage and reducing performance.
I am not a deisel expert so i am not sure of these claims
please if anyone can shed any light on this subject please feel free all advice will be apprecitated.

X2

I also had a Toyota service history and complained at each service. One day they rang me and said we've got 4 injectors, when can I bring it in. I know you don't have the Toyota service history but it's worth a try before you shell out thousands for a fix. What's the worst the can say? No.

I noticed no improvement in performance or economy with the new injectors. Just quieter when cold, especially in winter.

Good luck with it.

Your mechanic is exactly right mate. I just had my injectors replaced last week by B & M injection in Auburn, Sydney. Good honest service, for a total of $2400. Had the truck back same day too. My rattles have gone, my power is back, my fuel has dropped over a litre per 100 k's down to 9.2...and no smoke...give them a call if for nothing else bout good advice.

Where you from obiee? Mate just had his done in Coffs Harbour for 2500, could be the same guy. Sounds like exactly the same trouble he was having. Mate was quoted 5K in sydney, drove it home and got it done there. I'll find out who did it for him if your in the area.

I am also not an expert, but gut feeling told me that the engine was going to blow up if nothing was to be done. Don't leave it to a point that you need to rebuild the engine!

Yep, Lismore Diesel own both shops. My mate got his done at Coffs Diesel, very happy. The same thing happened with my mate when he got a quote from there, the Boss quoted 2600 and then the other bloke on the desk quoted more. My mate said that the boss quoted him less and they came back and said its $2400! So he booked it in!

We have a 2006 model with 300,000 k's that has been rattling badly when cold.

We just did a dealer service with new timing belt and valve clearances.

They stung me for their fuel system cleaning service, and for the first time I said yes.

I haven't driven it yet, but my employee (who is an ex toyota mechanic from the same dealer) said that the cold rattles are greatly reduced if not gone.

I'll drive it over the weekend and see for myself.

I don't really care if it rattles a bit as long as it doesn't overheat or use coolant/oil.

For 300,000 k's, it's going pretty strong.

We have a 2009 hilux and had the same prob but the prob originated in the high pressure pump. When you removed the fuel filter you could see the aluminium in the bottom of the bowl.
Took it to Toyota and they said there's a known problem with the high pressure pumps. Due to the poor diesel quality being used in australia.
Had got a quote from toyota and the cost was around $9000.
Toyota suggested to contact our company's insurance as insurance companies have paid out on this before.
Sure enough they paid for the whole job.
All the insurance company wanted is to know where we got the diesel from so they could go back on them.
Worth a try.

Do you mean the aluminium fell off from the pump and be returned to the tank and then end up in the filter.

I found some shiny particles in the bowl when I changed the filter. Does anyone know how long will it take for the pump to fail after such discovery?

I think that the most reasonable advice is to visit several mechanics or services to recheck the expected repair cost. You may find out that you will be given very different rates for the same job. So you will select the one that is the most affordable for you. And spend the difference in online casino Rich Prize. It is better that overpaying, do you agree?
