Try using a couple of tanks of BP Ultimate diesel, I'll swear it gives better economy.

Still 550 klm to the tank. will wait til warranty expires before putting a chip in it. from reading reviews the chip is a gamble, as money you save on fuel over 200,000 klm you will spend double that on fixing things that overheat/malfunction down the track due to not being manufactured to constantly perform under those conditions. Might be easier to sell it and buy a V6 petrol for that type of performance.

Sounds like the snorkel was not fitted properly, mine makes no noise nor have I heard others complaining about it either.
I would not be looking at a chip as an economy device, it gives you more power and in some situations you can hold the taller gears longer when touring that helps but I don't think I am saving any coin by having one.

Felix I have been doing the same using either the Caltex Vortex or the BP diesel and my economy is improving as well.

Increase fuel economy- diesel

Yeah my snorkel howls aswell when it's windy and it hits the mouth at the right angle. I purchased a filter to go over the mouth of the snorkel so shall see if it reduces the noise!

My TJM snorkle is noiseless ( :? is that a word?). Generally I get between 550 - 600km out of a tank when the light comes on. 2005 SR running 32's and stock gearing. Performance wise it was quite flat, struggling to keep up with well... almost anything :x Put a 3" Humex exhaust on it last week and got 600km out of the tank and it was just (only just) showing below the 1/4 mark. I reackon another 30-40km before the light comes on. It was also showing 235km when the exhaust went on, so that gain is over half a tank. Easily had more torque up the hills on the freeway. Sounded good too :D :D

The performance gain was astounding, which sugests to me the the original exhaust or cat may have been partially blocked/clogged :o :o

Mate that is a huge gain out of the exhaust. I didnt think that the gain was meant to be that noticable so maybe your old one was suss???

Who did the exhaust for you?

I wasn't expecting that much either, besides the sound, it spools up quicker and has significantly more torque down low. Will hold a higher gear around the burbs and on the freeway up hills at 110 which would have see me drop back to 100 flat to the boards, now I cruise up at 110 on half throttle, hills that before sent me back to 4th, I can now hold 110 in 5th.

My wife has driven the car and commented on how much better it goes, so it's not just me being wishfull. The old exhaust had to be restricted in some way for the difference to be so pronounced. I've got a chip coming in the mail and I can't wait to get that sucker in and see how it goes :D

Got the exhaust from Crosssport and bolted it up myself, its a straight forward process.

I still get a constant 700-720 out of a tank as far as i can work out.....

My speedo is exactly 10klms under the speed of the ute because of the 33's....when looking at the gps
I always get the same reading when filling up the tank 650 to 660 kms range....
So if you add on the 10% that the speedo is under reading im getting 715 to 726klms per tank.

I did a trip count on the new navman i got and the klms worked out to be with in 15klms of the trip metre on the ute.......
This is all around town,m5 and local driving,,,,I seem to use more on the long hwy drivers
******If you can ignore it its not a real problem******

finucs wrote:Thanks guys, I must have a bad model, are yours dual cabs? As I have been told some extra cabs are geared lower which increases fuel consumption. There is no way I get anywhere near your fuel economy. I have spoken to 4 other extra cab owners recently and they all said they only get between 450 to 550 klm per tank as well.

I've got an extra cab diesel and when new and bog stock I could get about 700-750 until bone dry. After a 3" lift, all bar work and accessories and 256/70/16 tyres, I now get around 600 til bone dry. That's off the speedo which is now reading incorrectly from the tyre size change. (I haven't calcutated the exact difference, although the adjusted range is probably about 650)
I figure the extra height and weight is the cause and it's not too bad and certainly worth the gain in capability. Interesting reading how big the gains are from an exhaust upgrade!

ok so after some km's now on my new lux, i was getting 850km with 3" pipe and chipit, however once i put the snorkle on and the lift in the front i lost about 100k's range... i havent looked into it but i assume that its the snorkle doing the damage, possibly the MAF semsor not reading correctly. ive got at least 10,000km to do in march on my holidays(woo hoo!) so il try running for a tank of fuel each time with the snorkle head in various positions and maybe even removed.

Bigs1976 wrote:Drew, you are claiming 8's & 9's. If we say 8.5 this would equate to about 11.7k's/ltr or 890k's out of a 76ltr tank. Wow, could this be true?? I have spoken to quite a few people about the D4 and the most I have heard of is 750k's on a tank or just under 10k's/ltr. Some guys tell me they only get 550k's on a tank. It seems that figures can vary greatly. I would love to have a load of real world figures to calc. some averages. I drive a 4ltr and I'm always interested in the economy debate.

BRILLIANT IDEA!!!

Depending on the right foot (and the easterly winds) I get between 500-600km per tank. I have all the fruit up front, the backs fairly light though

Long range fuel tank added. Still constantly get between 11.5 to 13 litres per 100klm. Vortex fuel made a difference of 1 litre per 100klm if doing 100k/hr constantly. Snorkel made no difference. Looking at another post, a few guys reckon the bigger exhaust make a difference. previous experience before turbo came in was extractors make big difference with diesel motors,so maybe exhaust does help. Will be my next modification I think. From reading aboout 'chipping' it appears good in short term, but eventually will wear down components, or engine runs to hot. If they were made to have a chip, you would think it would be an optional extra when buying brand new. But it obviously does something wrong as it voids warranty of engine. I wont be getting one until warranty expired at least.

As said above it all depends on your foot.

My lux is chipped, big tyres, exhaust etc & I drive it bloody hard & with my big tank I get the same range as my mate who babies his standard rig!....but I'm having a shit load more fun in mine :D

my best was a trip to Bermagui and back (800km's). Despite being heavily loaded with dive gear, she made it there and back on 1 tank!

have now done 7,000klm after fitting long range tank, snorkel, suspension, bullbar, side steps, carrying load of about 250kg on a trayback xtra cab. travelling 100k/hr on bitumen, using vortex consistently getting 12litres per 100klm. Just for interest sake.

yeh another one for comparison, my 2011 dc rig 3" lift, snorkel, chipit, humex 3" exhaust, dual batt, 265/65/15 baja atz, custom alloy canopy (be a fair bit of drag in that i suppose) 80lt watertank, longranger tank, airbagged, steel bar and side rails... bit of weight there. Consistantly in the 12-13.5. Some of the figures you guys claim is all i get out of a long range tank. Several overnight trips mackay - cairns nets around 118 to 125 liters for roughly 840-950ks (gps). Dropping chip from folder 2 tune 5 to 3 give me extra 50ks. any custom tunes just slip the clutch. Kinda wonder how much more she's gonna burn when i start cartin the speedway car around.
Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience ;)
