New noises

New noises

Postby elvin on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 4:53 +0000

I've just had the suspension and shocks upgraded, and front and rear diff lockers installed. I've noticed a new high pitched metallic noise. Can only hear it with the windows open, and more noticeable when the sound reflects off a passing vehicle, wall etc. It is a constant sound Should I be worried? Oh yeah, 2000 SR5 turbo diesel. There was a bit of a smell when I got home tonight. The rear diff was quite hot, but I've never bothered to feel it before, so not sure if that's normal. Any ideas?.

I would say that the diff gears are just meshing into each other, only time driving will help the sound fade away. All diffs get hot, hope this helps Steve.

the diff should be warn but not hot. I had a similar noise and it turned out to be a wheel bearing .. easy test jack up the car and spin the wheel you thinks making the noise an listen for anything unusual. also you can drop your diff oil an check for metallic flakes if the oils okay just reuse

Found the noise. It was the front disc brakes wear indicator. New pads, machine discs - noise gone!! Thanks for the help. ;)

Had a noise in mine for a few weeks . Drove me crasy. Finally found out it was the headlight protectors skeaking . Just needed to give the top bend a heat with hot water and bend it down a little to hold them firm.
