front coils hitting sway bar

front coils hitting sway bar

Postby rysermon on Sun, 07 Jul 2013 3:37 +0000

hey guys

after taking her out for its first proper off roading since my lift kit i noticed 2 things, the sway bar is knocking the base of the coils when its articulating while im turning and i believe so far only discovered on the passenger side the upper control arm i think it is called? is hitting the coil when its upwards articulating (wheels moving more into the guard) having amental blank today so excuse my crap choice of words when explaining

has anyone else experienced something similar of the sort and done something ?

i got bilstein struts with king spring coils 2in lift.

Monster Rides can provide a new sway bar bracket to reposition it and alleviate that problem and new UCA's are available from Monster Rides, Superior Engineering, Snake Racing etc to provide more clearance around the coils.

I wouldn't think it would hit with a 2 inch lift have you got any other mods or could it be more than 2 inch lift.

Mine did it when I first put my lift in. Turned out the mob that assembled my struts put the seating plates in upside down, which resulted in incorrect lift and sway bar scrubbing real bad. Not sure on the UCA problem tho.

Hey Mate,

The swaybar relocators are easy enough to fit... just undo the collars that fix them to the chassis and they go in easy enough.

It can make the job a bit easier also by removing the radiator support brackets to give yourself some more room and swear less at the swaybar.
Speaking if which... about maybe 20 - 30% of Hilux's will have an issue with the swaybar making contact with these radiator support brackets once the swaybar relocators are installed.
It just pushes the swaybar down a bit too much and due to the variations we see in the chassis' and also the swaybars you get a little contact. This isn't a big deal, but you will need to notch the radiatior support brackets to make clearance otherwise the squeak and groan for the swaybar rubbing on the brackets will drive you nuts.

I can't find photos of the notch you need to put the the radiator support brackets just now... but it's about half a 20c piece, roughly in the middle of the bracket. Again easy enough to do with a bench grinder and a round/flat bastard file to tidy it up. A few quick coats fo matte black paint will keep the rust away as well.

Anyway here are some images of the swaybar relocators installed:

The anodising is now black as well... Here is what you get in the kit... everthing you need to install @ $100 delivered:

Any questions please let me know... these swaybar relocators are in stock and ready to ship.

FYI recieved the monster rides sway bar relocators from matt @ monster rides, theyre mint, fitted them in piece of cake and does the job like it should, had to knick off maybe 5 or so mm off the drivers side radiator support (was slack its sitting flush against it) shouldnt be a problem i dont think ?

anyways mint thanks for the help guys and matt !

Hi guys, just wondering if there's a cheaper way to lift higher then 2inch and for your coil spring not to hit upper control Arm,(without buying aftermarket UCA's ?)

In my experience with US coil overs which invert the shock can, which means the spring hangs lower, the sway bar relocation is not quite enough to get clearance for the lower spring. The radiator supports also limit how far you can relocate the sway bar forward.

There are two solutions we devised. One is to extend the sway bar links (eg. Cut and extend with some tube welded in the middle) so that the sway bar is relocated lower so it does not foul the spring. I did track down some after market sway bar links that were made from threaded rod so you could make them any length. Unfortunately, one of the ends was not compatible with the Hilux fixtures.

The other approach I adopted on my rig was to get a spring works to apply some heat and bend the sway bar outwards so it cleared the spring . I did this in addition to the sway bar relocators which have been in use in the US for years and in fact usually come as standerd with coil overs such as those from sway away.

Sounds like you guys have it sorted for your suspension but in my opinion the extended sway bar link is the cleanest solution if one was devised.
