hey guys i am new to the hilux scene i just bought an 08 turbo diesel hilux and was wondering if its possible to install coils in the rear and remove the leafs all together iv had a look through the forum and havent come across anything yet....i am a boilermaker/welder by trade and am thinking is it possible to just weld in some plates on the diff and chassis to house the springs and thats it away u go or is it not as simple as that and if not why and what am i missing?i also thought if it was as simple as that everyone would probably do it,if it cant be done that way can u put a landcruiser diff and suspension setup under them and how much would that cost roughly in parts?cheers in advance guys all opinions welcome

Have a look through his build will give you an idea but its a bit more complicated than the springs alone. I had a quote down in Sydney to have a Patrol converted from rear leaf to coil and it was 6k. Bit top heavy IMO
If your after good flex there are other things you can do with the leaf springs. Monaz has been playing with his getting some good travel

Buds customs also reworks your leafs and moves your shocks around for better flex. A lot cheaper than a coil swap

Not really. Best bet is to contact him directly. I know he inverts the shocks. Have a look back in toddies build up he ran this for a few week before that coil sas.

But one other backyard option that works not bad I seen done is to cut the rear leaves just after the diff housing so the front half is only used as a locator.

You then weld in plates to hold a coil spring in place so the left over leaves are really working as a locator.

Not entirely legal but I seen it done and it works alright.

why would you cut the leaves when you could just do this:

Is that in your truck I don't recall seeing it in your build thread.

thats a strap to holding the axle to chassis

it's not my truck, but the idea has been around for many years (I looked at doing it nearly 20 years ago on my Sierra)

cutting the leaves allows you to shorten your chassis rail right back if you wanted for more departure angle.

I don't see how that pic with the coils and leaves would change anything. The leaves would still limit you. Unles they were 4" longer super flexy and she shock and coil were pretty stiff

As Kyle said, I have been playing around with the rear set up on my truck for a while now. Currently the setup is at 75mm longer custom top leaf and modified spring pack, Monster Rides extended shackles with an extended brake line and extra long travel Monster Ride shocks. It has been working flawlessly for over six months now, and I get fairly decent travel from it.

Next satge of R&D will be to modify the handbrake cable giving it more length as Im fairly sure that is holding up possibly 2 inchs of unused travel in the shocks, custom shaped shackles and possibly an A-frame shock mount setup.

Get rid of the leaves completely Monaz and chuck some 16" coilovers in straight up through the tub

Im with you Monaz similar set up & gives great travel

MR longer shocks
Tough dog light load springs
Ext shackles

It suprised me when i first saw the flex. The leave separate & i can put my finger in the gap. At first i thought not good but the retaining clamps hold nicely.

I would imagine the above set up that packateer posted with springs is to allow the use of light load springs and more payload ability under load. The flex from springs would be better than air bags im guessing
