My ute has started making a clunk sound about 2 weeks ago. Sounds like its coming from the rear somewhere. I can mainly hear it when I am reversing or going from forward to backwards and when going slow up my driveway.
I'll tighten the spare tomorrow but I only checked the tightness about 4 weeks ago so cant see why it would be loose. The leafs seem fine and are nice and clean, all joints are greased up too.

I've heard something about the tailshaft making a noise from too much grease, could this have anything to do with it?

I had a clunking noise coming from the rear in my 100series, toyota pulled the LSD out and had that recond and still the noise. took it to another mechanic here in newy and had it for two days checking every thing he could and could not find it... could hear it but not find it and did not charge me for the time. He put some new grease in the tail shaft and sent me on my way....Noise gone.lol
When it came back every couple of months, I gave it some grease, noise gone.
someone elses problem now, traded for the Hilux and see someone driving the old cruiser around here, so will have to let him know if I pullup beside him one day.

My spare was fully tight but I took it off completely and the noise is still there. Sounds like I can hear it when going slow around a corner or roundabout. Like a clunk/tap sound just once. Definitely sounds like the rear. All the shackles are greased so any other ideas?

Do you have greasable rear springs as mine was doing it until I pumped fresh grease in. Its just started doing it again after 6 months so must be due for another grease

Yea mate, greased them a month ago but il do it again just to be sure. I also got under there this afternoon and sprayed inox on pretty much every moving part and its still doing it haha

Must be transmission wise.. I jumped up and down on the ute front and back and theres no noise from the suspension. I noticed it does it when I go from forward to backwards. Anyone else help?

Surprised it hasn't been mentioned in the whole thread. First thing I check is the towball hitch. Some dont have them so that rules that out. Cruiser does it every day going into work

Towball hitch is pretty loose as I take it out pretty often to put a receiver in. But the noise can be heard going snail pace and reversing up the curb so that isnt the sound. I can hear my Towball and its a different sound. Thanks though.

Try the back seat. Our work utes used to make noises like this after 3 or so years. Especially notice it when people are sitting in back. Nylon on rear back seat wears and movement stars on the attachments on the rear cab wall. Echo's like shit due to no insulation there

I have a single cab haha so Nope. I even decided to look at the front suspension today and everything looks fine. Could it be the brakes?

My hard lid clunks when I go over big bumps if its not locked down

No tub or lid either man. I can hear it when very slowly reversing and applying the foot brake. What could that mean?

You are not talking about he front brake pads clunking are you - some do this when you go into reverse and apply the brakes as the pads move around a little

I get a similar clunk in mine but only when it's wet and it clears up once the rear end drys out, never got to then end of what causes it.

Hey apo had a clunk with mine ended up being a the eye on the bottom of a strut couldn't tell until I broke right in half as it would go back into place worth a check

I cant hear the clunk noise in the brakes over the masive clunk it makes in the drive train and auto box going from forward to reverse

does it do it when you slowly articulate the suspension?

ie find a mound to drive over, or what i did was use my ramps at home to flex the suspension ...

I found my leaf spring bushes were utterly flogged out.

May sound Stupid Guys but was amazed when i found it..
Check that the Hand Brake Cable coming from the rear Axles up to the centre cable is all secure and not hitting the body there are a couple of brackets built onto the cable. My old boys Work Hilux was driving him mad found one little bracket loose allowing it to hit the body just below the rear door. for something so little man it was LOUD....

Just checked all the brake cables and tightened it all. The leaf bushes are lubed up but i suppose it's possible they are flogged out. The front suspension squeaks a little bit but it sounds like its the rear end. I cant hear the sound if I sit the ute on flat ground with the engine off and shake the feck out of it. It's so annoying!.
