hey guys looking at getting my stock sr5 alloys sandblasted and powder coated but am a bit worried on how they will wear and how long they will last. if anyone else has gone down this path would love some info also if anyone knows any good places that do sandblasting and powdercoating in melbourne thanks heaps

I would stay away from Powdercoat, I did my Steel rims whilst they look great new they quickly got barked up fairly quickly and looked pretty ordinary. Powercoat is also hard to remove unlike paint if you want to respray.

Have heard powder coating chips easily, I used some "easy surface prep" and afew cans of matte black killrust well over twelve months ago still going strong

really thought they would be ok i wont be doings heaps of gnarly off road stuff only every now and then thought this would be a better option than trying to hunt down 17" steelies.

Have a look at 2pac did my steel sr5 spare it looks great after few years
Not sure about Alloy u will have to fine out about that

Powdercoat is durable if its been cured at the correct temperature but the finish is average.

Personally I'd choose 2pac.

Just spray them with satin or mat Rustgaurd.

I used hammertone rattlepacks on my steelies came up pretty good and if they get scuffed I'll just put on another coat, cheap as well

cheers guys thinking it might be a bit to much of a hassle getting them sprayed up cause they will need to be sand blasted first. so i might just get a set of steelies i'm thinking maybe some pro comps and keep the stock wheels as spares

Ignore the "no curing required" quote on the page - takes 7 days to cure

Good call rds - a lot of effort and $'s can be spent referbing old rims, often at the same or higher cost of new and rust free ready painted rims... depending on what your or your painters time is worth

edit - and of course factoring in what sort of new rims you want and the price of those... cheaper to refurb alloys, more viable to buy new steelies

powder coating is much stronger than paint and will last alot longer then paint. its all in the prep work and cure time in the oven and if u are getting an average finish as TRDLuxxy said then it has been done wrong. ive been doing it for around 10 years now and the old man has been doing it for around 20

damn you work looks a1 i wanted to get my stock sr5 ones powdercoated cause i like the rims and i reckon they look great but I've been told alloys aren't the best for 4wd as they may crack ??

Never seen powdercoat done to that standard, always had orange peel and small bubbles from what I've seen.

A bloke here in SA had his stock SR5 rims powder coated. Lasted over a year and looked great, was going to buy them for my lux however wanted too much $$

yeah i could get them powder coated for around $300-$400 but im worried they wont withstand 4wd when i could by steel rims for roughly the same price
