What are you running on Stock 17x6 SR Rims

Postby mickms on Wed, 08 Apr 2015 9:42 +0000

hey,

I'm looking at installing 245/70/17 BFG All Terrains on my stock,
14 SR 4x4 that came with 225/70/17 on 17x6 steel rims.

Stock 17x6 Rims are too narrow for the above tyre. BFG states 17x7.5 minimum.
Allianz will not insure me if I go beyond 1" wider rim = 17x7 max.
Hard to find a decent cheap alternative in 17x7. Mainly 17x8, e.g. dynamic Sunny Style.

Might have to changer insurer, not sure if they would insure a 17x8 or is it legal for an SR.
Just car insurance Said they would insure as long as its legal, and my premium would increase about $20 per month more for the 17x8 upgrade. $240 PA = BS

Keeping in mind i want to be fully covered by insurance, as the car is still owned by the bank.

Much time spent researching, tyre dealers = some good many bad with advice. In the event of an accident can responsibly be placed on these "qualified" tyre installers if it goes pare shaped?

If tyres were the cause? Or deemed illegal?
Do they have any liability at all?

What are you running on Stock SR Rims?

Very Very confusing.

Thanks.

I'm having the same problems.

I'm going to stick with the 17x6 steelies and look for a tyre that will fit.

In answer to your question I've been told on good authority your insurance will dis-own you if your tyres aren't load rated to your lux in the event of a crash/claim.

A bloke in Perth recently went to jail for killing his son by crashing with a modified diff, correct me if I'm wrong.

Tyre shop dude told me straight out he wouldn't fit a tyre I requested as there is ramifications for him if I crash, they were not rated for my lux.

Has anyone had good results from a tyre that will go on the 17x6 steelies. I need a 50/50 A/T or an M/T that can handle the Gibb and Kimberley region in general. Lots of people in Broome are running Coopers or BFG's and a few Bridgstoners.

Any help would be great as I've searched a bit on here and found nothing yet.

I have 75 x 225 Maxis on stock rims on 2007 SR lux. Im happy with them. Pretty sure the tyre shop said they were load rated.

I have a 2014 SR and have 2014 SR5 17 x 7.5's. I've been in the insurance game for many years and am very conscious of modifications that might void cover. I felt OK about the SR5's rims as they are OEM on the same vehicle. I'm guessing SR's the same underneath as an SR5 (bar optional VSC), although offset might be different? I'd be interested in advice in that regard.
PS - Due to being in the insurance game I would never do the rear seat mod. Brilliant as it is, insurers do absolutely anything, every day, to avoid paying claims. CTP insurers are no different, and should your rear seat passengers sustain injury or be killed in a rollover your insurers will blame the mod and you'll struggle to prove otherwise. The insurer may then seek recovery of costs from you personally.

So far I've been told Cooper at3 225/75/17,Bridgestone 697 225/70/17 and adventuro at3 240/70/17 will go on the 17x6 rims. Finally found a tyre bloke in Broome who will look into it for me(Frederick street servo for those up here, Rob)

Tyre man told me there are new sunny's out that allow for the huge caliper on the front brake that the '14 model has. Anything before 2014 is 16 inch or smaller on the SR? I got priced at about $140 per rim for the new sunny.

Hope to find out soon about the range available, as some tyre mobs don't add rim width when showing tyre specs.

norwester,

any link to the new sunnies you mentioned?

very true i had problems finding which rim would suit the appropriate tyre.
overall i thing its very soft of toyota selling the SR with such narrow 17x6 rims that are hard to match with any decent tyre. when the SR5 comes with a 17x7.5 standard.

good luck, keep posting your progress guys!

Dynamic make a 17x7 in a +28 offset specifically for the 2013+ SR hilux.
ROH are also making a 2013+ SR hilux specific wheel which will be 17x7 +30 offset.

Dynamic state max tyre width for this rim is a 245 so that it does not stick out of the guards.

I have been looking into wheels and tyres for my 2013 SR hilux for about the last year. I think the best option is the dynamic 17x7 +28 offset with a 245/70 tyre or a 245/75 tyre if you want that bit more height gain. There are minimal tyre options in the 225/70. once you go to the 245/70 your tyre options are virtually limitless

What 17x7.5 rims were you trying to get covered by allianz mate? Just bought a SR and was thinking of putting on the SR5 rims on it with the stock 265's but I wont bother if its going to affect the insurance
