Road / Sand Tyre Recommendations

Hi there,

Now I've used the advanced search and its not bringing but what I'm wondering.
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=Best+mud+tyre&sa=Search&sitesearch=www.newhilux.net&gws_rd=ssl#safe=off&q=Best+sand+tyre+site:www.newhilux.net

Ok I admit I'm have no idea about tyre sizes etc and slowly starting to update my hilux and getting a headache from trying to understand everything. I have a 2008 SR that currently has Wranglers on it at 225 / 75 / 16.

I have 2 questions regarding tyre sizing and my use.

1) What max size can the 16inch rim go to? Toyota site says my Hilux came out on 205's?

2) I'm chasing tyres that I can use weekly on the road and on the weekend to the beach on the rare occassion. Probably twice a month if that and I do drive on the farm on weekends too but mainly wanting something thats easy in the sand, reduce road noise and gain fuel efficiency.

I emailed a tyre shop and they suggested the Mickey T's STV, BF Goodrich AT and Pirelli Scorpion ATR.

Doing my head in here :| Any feedback appreciated.

1. road & Sand: Mickey t Stz. Pricey but worth it.
2. Great all rounder: bfg a/t great value!

Size: well a good size would be 265/70-16 or 265/75-16.

Can't beat BFG all terrains. Great wear, safe on wet roads, acceptable on soft sand at 15 psi. Very cheap. Hard to beat

Appreciate the replies guys. Why can I go up to the 265? I've probably mis-read but thought it was 50mm on the original tyre size of 205 that came with the car? And no lift needed? Going to put this on the front till I save more coin to do it properly.

http://shop.snakeracing.com.au/hilux-05 ... 50mm-lift/

I have been pricing local and from tirerack as well.

No don not put strut spacers in. They are dangerous and illegal. Fit heavy duty springs to your standard struts instead will only cost a little bit more, call ultimate suspensions and speak to Brendan. $200 is for the springs and $100 ish to get them fitted

50mm larger overall diameter.
That number eg; 265 is the section width.

No spacers, just coils.
I recently did a lift on a Hilux, it had spacers & UCA was hitting well in the coil. Bad angles. Not to mention standard bump stops too.
Not good, ditched those & put a proper kit in.

I don't think a shop will fit anything wider than 245 on a standard rim.

Any decent a/t will serve you well.

Does that mean if I go 265 its illegal? Don't want to get new tyres and be stung.

Found some for $260 each and $15 for each tyre to be fitted.

Have you though of getting some newer 17inch SR5 wheels and std tyres (265/65/17) off ebay or the like, should find some where someone has updated to something else and basicaly giving them away. To be honest I think the standard tyres that come with the SR5 would best suit your needs as they are the best for sand and road. - Mud may be a different situation.

Oh pick up pre 2011 15" SR5 alloys (gumtree heaps always for sale) then you can run 31x10.5" tyres and they are so much cheaper than any other size. Gearing and economy works best with this size.

I run cooper AT3 (aggressive all terrain), LT variant, 31x10.5 on 15 inch alloys.

50k on them so far, probably half worn.

They do great at 12-14psi, nice long foot print.

Great on road.

I have the same as qwerty and Iam very happy with them.
Being my first 4wd I was told by the guy at the tyre shop that these were really good and they were a lot better then the previous model.

I have taken them on the beach and out bush and for my knowledge they have done a great job
Also they are very quiet
I have done 20k on them and they still look pretty new.

Yep the 31's are a good size tyre for road and beach, heaps to choose from and cheap as......
The Cooper AT's I had on a previous ute were very hard though and really bad in the wet :?....I assume they have a new compound on the AT3's :?:

from all accounts , the AT/3 (LT variant, not the non LT) are a different ballgame altogether compared to the former "ATR's" which were apparently pretty crap. AT3 defiantely more aggressive too, i wouldnt have gone ATR.

Be careful not to get non LT variants too, they're weaker apparently.

Google any tyre thoough, youll find people pissed off with them. (same goes for banks, internet providers, manufacturers , boats and women).

Most 4wd tyres that get a lot of KM's are going to get hard toward the end of their life, thats my view anyway

I replace mine at about 70% worn... with a young family, i take no chances, plus i like lots of tread.

I agree I had Cooper ST on my old lux and they were plain f$@#&% dangerous in the wet. Couple of times I had to brake late and ended up in a 4 wheel drift. Not pretty

265/75/16 is more than 50mm bigger in diameter than the original 205/16.

(for anyone who cares -most obviously don't  )

Hey guys with all the rain we have had in sydney this couple if weeks I can honestly say my at3s are doing a fantastic job in the rain they have saved me a couple of times driving in traffic.

The sales guy did say they had changed from the old style I can't recall what exactly but he said I would be happy with them
No complaints so far

I,d ask the tyre fitters to b sure but a 265 on a 16x6 rim would b too wide for my liking.
