31s on 97-05hilux

Need something to get you rolling?

31s on 97-05hilux

Sorry if this is already covered, I tried searching but as far as I can tell I was only getting 05+ information.

I have a 2000 sr5 hilux, and am wanting to upgrade to 31x10.5x15 tyres. I've heard that you can run 31's on the standard sr5 rims no worries, but the guy at the local bridgestone reckons you need to lift the front as the mud guard rubs. Thought I had read on here you could, but after searching I'm not sure if I was reading about newer models.

I'm looking at my current 29s, which have about 2"-3" clearance at the mudguard mount he pointed to, and don't see how a 1" larger radius would affect it. Perhaps the issue was more to do with offset? He couldn't remember anything more than that the torsion bars had to be adjusted.

Can you run 31s on standard 2000 sr5 rims, with no lift?

Thanks

I have a mate with 2000ish lux on 31'x10.5 and they rub pretty bad up front... maybe you could play around with offsets or throw a body lift / suspension lift in it

you can, but you will need a good wheel alignment that has a bit more castor to accommodate for that.. the driver side will rub a tiny bit ( if you suspension hasn't sagged out yet) on a right hand turn.
if your front end is pointing down, level it (or close to) out and you should be fine.

I had an 02 workmate with 04 sr5 rims and 31s, they rubbed bad on the mudflaps, removed front mudflaps and only had slight body rub on drivers side when turned right full lock and going up kerb/over bumps etc nothing major.... Stock suspension.

I have an 03 Hilux
Ran 31's on stock suspension with sag and rubbed a little on full lock. Few turns of the adjusters for the torsion bars fixed that. Although the design of the adjusters is terrible. The adjusting nut is on top with a concave "dish" which gets full of sand, mud, dust and dirt and then water and rusts the adjusters solid. When I went for a 2" inch suspension lift, they had to be cut out to replace the torsion bars.

More offset will make it worse as you are effectively increasing your track width so the outer wall of the tyre swings through a wider arc which then rubs more. Standard SR5 rims should be ok with a few tweeks of the torsion bars.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I might just get one tyre fitted to my spare first and have a mess around with the torsion bars until it fits nicely, hopefully mine aren't in too bad condition.

A lot of guys (myself included) run 2 sets of tyres.
I have 29's in a highway tread for daily driving and a set of 31's in a mud tyre for play time.

Whereabouts are you? You might be better off buying a second hand set of 31's on rims. Put them on and have a play to get the scrubbing sorted. I even have a set of 31's in an All Terrain with no rims in the shed I might consider selling off if you are in Brisbane and can pick up a set of rims.

The other thing to remember is 31's are a sizing based on a generic sizing used by tyre manufacturers. I found my 31's A/T's were fine with a 2" suspension lift but when I first put on the 31's muddies, one side scrubbed a little at full lock under compression. The "aggressiveness" of the tread pattern will also change the scrubbing. Bigger lugs and wide side wall lugs make a difference.

Unfortunately I live in an apartment with shared garage, so can't really store a second set of tyres. Besides if I had the funds, I'd get the lift too :D

I think if I sort out scrubbing on the spare, then I should be able to at least get it home and adjust a little more if I have to. The Bridgestone Duellers are actually a little under 31" from memory, bigger lugs shouldnt be an issue.

How did you end up going, did the 31's end up fitting ok? I'm looking at doing the same on my 02 SR5 with stock suspension.

Sorry mate, I haven't gotten around to it yet. Hopefully I'll have them on in the next month or two. If you beat me to it, let us know how you go

They'll fit fine, slight rubbing on the plastic innerguard with the mudflats removed on SR5 offset wheels.. I also ran 31s on wide offset (sat over 10mm past SR5 flares) with a bit of massaging the inner guard it rubbed considerably on full lock flexing on shagged out stock suspension..
