Brisbane West Side tyre repair and wheel alignment

Hi all,

On a recent trip to manar park I managed a flat tyre down at the river.



After removal I noticed some uneven wear towards the outside of the tyre as well.

Any recommendations for tyre repair and wheel alignment on Brisbane westside? They are the standard 2002 steel rims with Dunlop SP RoadGripper F.

I was thinking fourbys at moorooka but haven't been there before... I'm at Bellbowrie so anywhere from moorooka to ipswich would suit.

Got the tyre / wheel alignment sorted today at fourby's. Didn't charge as much as I expected and it drives much better.

Also had a chat about the steel split rims that are on there, so I'm booking it back in for an upgrade ... nah, nothing special, they have some standard hilux steel 1 piece rims nice and cheap

You just get a standard toe in wheel alignment or the big one doing camber and castor? Charge you much?

Just the standard I think, going by the price - $55, it was on the machine for about 40 mins.

$88 all up for the repair, balance both front wheels (inc swapping the tyre on the rim due to the wear/scrubbing), and wheel alignment. Previously it was drifting left a little and had a 'wobble' between 70-90k's with no load on, both problems gone now - although I'll still go back for some upgraded steel rims.

Took their time, had a good chat and I noticed they used a torque wrench on the wheel nuts. Can't remember the last time I saw a tyre shop torque wheel nuts - usually rattle gun and off you go...

Torque wrench on wheel nuts hahaha. Yeah I might give them a try once I replace my CV and get my ute working again

12 mechanics in out shop. We have to tick on the repair order we used a torque wrench on nuts.

Every tech uses a torque wrench or torque bars.

It is the only way you can irrefutably guarantee the nuts are at correct tension.

Seems like good practice to me boxhead55 - and takes buggar all extra time, maybe extra couple of mins on a slow day.

A few years ago I was at a tyre shop of one of the major chains, waiting for service I was just watching the workshop. A guy rattles up 3 wheels and then gets interrupted by the front desk/customer asking questions. Turns around and rattles up the last wheel... or so he thought. Seems he did 1 wheel twice, and 1 wheel not at all. Needless to say the car was back in 5 mins with a wheel wobbling all over the place and 3 nuts missing.

I also recently purchased a new MX bike, take it home, get the manual and go over it with a torque wrench. Surprising how many bolts weren't to spec. And not insignificant ones either, triple clamps and axles!

There is also the opposite benefit to torquing the nuts properly, some guns are wound up way too high and the nut is too tight, making it difficult to remove on the side of a track with a tyre lever.

sm169r, I wonder if you could find some suitable wheels on Gumtree? There are a few of those 17” Prado steelies around brisbane..

I think I've found a set, but just want to check this is still valid for 2013 SR steel wheels and my 2002 model?
Can anyone confirm the standard 2002 split rims are +30 and the 2013 SR are +45, that seems to be what I have found. Which would put each wheel 15mm closer for a reduction of 30mm track overall.

Thanks for the tip on the prado 90 series wheels. Found a set of 5, cleaned them up, sanded, primed and painted they came up great (although it took some time and elbow grease)

Hunted up some tyres to suit, ended up with 6 cooper discoverer atr 225/75R16 with approx 60% tread.

Total cost including purchases, materials and fitting/balancing... $475 Three cheers for the internet
