Different width tyres

Postby Snglcablux on Fri, 01 Jun 2012 7:28 +0000

Probably a stupid question and I hope it hasn't been covered before but does anyone run different width tyres? Say 33x10.5x15 on the front and 33x12.5x15 on the back. Or is this a bad idea, I get my new single cab sr in another 7-9 weeks and I'm leaning towards 32x11.5x15 bfg km2 but I've started thinking of 33's but fitting a 12.5 up front sounds like hard work

Don't do it man if it's a 4x4, you would end up loosing your transfer case, gear box or diff due to windup.
If your not keen on the effort involved fitting 33's (not to meantion the coin) then just stick with the 32's.

Go with the narrow 33's, I run them. Only thing I did was remove the mud flaps at the front

X2
The BFGs are narrow on a 16' rim, I'm sure there are other brands too.

so the diffs wind up with different width tyres hey, I was thinking that was from height of tyre, I'll go the 32's for sure, I'm driving in very harsh country (north-west qld) so I can't have drama like breaking driveline from diff windup

Different width also means different height, to a degree. Someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

Also you would need different offsets on front to rear if you wanted to keep the wheels the same stands.
I have BFG narrow tires only with 2inch lift irks for me.

Different width tyres

Postby Qwerty on Sat, 02 Jun 2012 12:34 +0000

It's the different height(diameter)(rolling circumference) that matters. Ie 31 32 33

Do not mix heights you will chew through money faster than a bull in a china shop.

Different height means one wheel rolling more than others = big wind up stress

Not sure if widths matter (to windup) probably be some handling behaviors but not sure what

Make sure your spare is same height too no point it being different youll wind up drivetrain / diffs if ever using it.

Choose a size and stick with it all round including your spare unless you enjoy complications and expensive recoveries

Yeah ill be down the shop for 6 32x11.5.r15 km2's and black sunnies very shortly, i think the 33x10.5 look a bit narrow to me, im sure they work great but im thinking the extea with of an 11.5 is going to help with the light back end of the single cab, i understand about the different height tyres changing the ratio front to back but was wondering if anyone ran same height, same brand, different width front to back, i know it would take 2 spares on different rims, its in my too hard basket but wondering if its ever been done, im no mechanic but i thought it would work

In theory it should work but it's hard to get a tyre the same height reguardless if they are specified as the same height. Stick to the same all around, it's really not that much work to make slightly bigger tyres fit anyway

There is cheaper / safer ways to lift the front rather than spacers that are a bit of a concern depending on who you talk to. Change your front springs and keep factory strutts it works well.

Or keep your front springs and change your struts to a set of Billies and your ute will ride heaps better plus if if you fit a bar etc later you can keep them and just change the springs. The $$ difference isn't that much for a much much better setup over spacers

So spacers are a no go then, i was looking for a cheap lift to fit the 32x11.5's on, then a bullbar in a few months, then lockers, then a full suspention lift, i may have to bite the bullet and get a proper lift first, im trying to space out the spending to keep the woman quiet, so whats the better way to get the 32's on? Replace the shock or spring? And how much $ we talkin?

Strutts will depend on what you go for
I did heavy duty springs in the front factory struts for $350 lovells springs then fitted the bar works very well
Next for me will be billies and some buds shackles

Mate if you go with just a proper set of struts like the Bilsteins and keep the rest of the suspension components you can set your rig up as high as you want and later add the heavier coils etc when you get a bar etc. there is nothing wrong with the factory springs it is just that they are too light to carry all of the accessories. If you go and put the heavier coils in now it will ride like shit.

If you do it this way you are not wasting money buying bits that will need to be changed later plus you will still have a quality setup from day one.
