increasing tire size, would it affect abs?

Postby knight on Sat, 05 May 2012 11:29 +0000

Ive got a 2012 SR extra cab and ive been trying to sort out new tires and rims for our cape trip next month.

but anyway the guy from the local tire shop is telling me that the biggest i can go with out affecting my abs brakes is a 245/70r16. well i was hopeing to get a bit bigger i.e.: 265/75R16.

I cant see it making too much of a difference as the SR5 hiluxs come factory with bigger wheels anyway.

So basically has anyone heard of this problem, or has anyone had any problems with there abs?

On a side note should i fit a 265/75R16 with no lift in the front?

Cheers guys

yeah i didnt see it being a major problem. i understand if i bolt on 35's or something that my braking distances would be a lot longer, but as the abs relies on the individual wheel speed of each wheel in relation to the others (as long as all the wheels are the same size) it would be fine

Bigger tyres affects stopping distance, not the ABS system.

The tyre guy at the tyre shop doesn't know what he is talking about. Workout what tyres you want and just tell them to order them. (if they can manage that)

I went large coopers on a 2007 single cab turbo diesel and they looked great, but, I went back to standard sr5 wheels and tyres once they wore out as they are better suited to the design performance. If you want looks then go for it! Cheers.

when i first put the tires on it was on standard suspension. it has since had a 2inch lift form ultimate, still fine, no cv problems. its been lifted for the last 15000kms and when up the cape and back no worries

SR VSC and SR5 come with 265/65/17 (30.6") so you can go at least that big. 265/75/16 is a 31.6 tyre so not so much larger, I doubt it would be an issue
