New Wheels & Rubber - Smack some sense into me

Ok, someone please smack some sense into me......

I'm about to upgrade my late 2009 styleside hilux with a new set of wheels and tyres plus an EFS 2 inch lift, I have decided on the prado copies but I'm tossing up between;

Prado Wheels 16inch + BFG KM2's.......or........Prado Wheels 17inch + BFG All Terrains......

It's been driving me nuts.......I'm not sure if I should go 16's or 17's. My driving is mostly 70% road and 30% dirt/mud but when I'm off road I need to cater for everything getting up into some hunting areas and also open paddocks with red and black soil.

I drool over the KM2's but also see the All Terrains as a sensible option.

I've been through literally all the posts within the tyre and wheel section and looked at all reviews....

Deliver the hard facts.......what should I do :? :?

But would the Km2's be better on the black top, than a set of A/Ts in the sticky stuff..(this would make sense if you did 50/50 driving)

from what I have heard, the KM2s still are pretty good for road driving, and when you are off road you know they are going to work. If you have the A/TS, sure they will be marginally better on the tar, but off-road that wont handle nearly as well in heavy mud or greasy tracks.

Why don't you run 2 sets of rims!

one with tyre' s for road use and a aggressive set of muddies for the weekend!

Ok, I hear what your saying, I can't run two sets as its just not worth the pain of changing and changing back.

Thanks for the comments guys, I will do some more home work and post some pics once the work is all done.

there is no right answer to your dilemma, everyone has there own preference. Maybe go with a configuration that allows you to try the muddie and then go back to an A/T if you don't like it?

Each way bet.

I had the same dilemma. I chose the duratrac's, best choice I ever made :-)

I've got ATZ 4-rib and recon they are great. Good on road, good mileage, and good off road. Made it thru everything they guys in front did with muddies on. The ATZ 4-rib is a pretty aggressive A/T tyre, some of the smaller print on the side wall even says "M/T"

A/T in a LT265/70R17/E would be my choice as LT315/70R17/D wont fit
The only thing i dont like about my new hilux is no 35"
had 35x12.5x15 A/T on my last and 2wd was all in needed to keep up with stock 4b's

I had A/T but upgraded to the KM2's 265 75 R16 they are great on the tar and awesome off road even really good in the sand (soft sand I might add). If you stick with the 16 rims you will gain a bigger footprint when you air down compared to a 17 inch rim
They will look way better the only bad thing is the noise but I'm used to it now, you could always just crank the tunes louder anyways

As an option for the 17's I've looked at the BFG All Terrains and Cooper St's....seem pretty aggresive for an all terrain pattern.

I read a review which compared all the all terrains and all the mud terrains and BFG KM's were the quietest off road out of the muddies which sparked my interest. Not to mention all most of the trucks out front of the ARB in Nundah and Coopers Plains have KM'2 on them. I know that's a marketing thing but the guys in the shop rated them.

At the moment I am swaying towards the KM2 set up........

Anybody have any experience with the 16 inch prado copies.......no issues with load problems or the like?

I don't know why but the BFG muddies footprint is much narrower than other brands of the same size

I have had both BF a/t's and KM'2s.I recon the KM2s are better on the road than the a/t's even in the wet.

One problem i had with the a/t's was they pick up little rocks when on the dirt and hold them till your on the road again and shoot up at your ute like a bullet.

I would go the KM2's,,,,Once you have them you will never consider going back to a A/T tread ,,,,,,,,,,,,,
As for rim size im not sure cause i have only ever run 16's

Get the muddies...and deal with increase tyre wear and fuel economy loss for the extra traction offroad.

I had BFG AT's on my last hilux and thought they were slippery as hell on wet roads.

Been running muddies ever since, just need to drive accordingly and you wont have a problem.

MTR's all the way by the way

Well, I've been a fan of the BFG ATS until very recently.....cant fault 'em for touring etc, but after a particulary nasty Pilbara washed out/scoured goat track that required a bit of wheel spin ( and a fair bit of sh#tting myself ) I've noticed that they've chipped off some tread. Probably more to do with my driving techniques ( sh#tting oneself usually results in lots of throttle and therefore wheelspin ). Might give the muddies a go next tyre change..... Oh and I'm running the Prado 17" steelies. Cheap enough to get from the Dealers - $140ish each
