Low Range 2WD MOD for SR5 Hilux 2004 1kz

Low Range 2WD MOD for SR5 Hilux 2004 1kz

Postby Blair Knight on Tue, 11 Jun 2013 5:32 +0000

I'm in the process of doing a 2004 SR5, not much info out there so ill post, there are 2 solenoids next to the air box, the one closest to the front of the car engages 4WD by vacuum from the diesel pump, the pink wire with a bluey/green stripe can be traced back into passenger side kick panel, cut and re-route that wire through a toggle on the dash and your good, a relay could be installed but pink wire is fairly small so the current draw is minimal.
Hint....use a switch with a seperate bright led circuit so it let's you know when your front wheels are not being driven as it goes into 4WD automatically when in low range.
Makes backing the boat or caravan so much easier, especially on a hill.

mine is 2004,the last of the Japanese Hiluxs, the older shape, look under your bonnet on the right under the air box, 2 solenoids will be there, check the wire colours, should be the front most solenoid. I have tried to identity the trigger wire for this model and believe I have found it, it is common (white with black stripe) to 2 switches on the gearbox but its not happy when you isolate that wire so I went with the solenoid wire. I rang everywhere and couldn't find anyone that could give me any info on this mod.

Note you have to engage your switch with motor running before engaging 4 WD as the solenoid is not spring loaded and needs the initial vacuum to make sure the front diff is disengaged. Works fine for me, pm me for help .

theres an easier way!!!!!!!

on my 2003 kzn165 sr5 hilux, I disconnected the blue plug just above the middle of the gearbox. that appears to be the sensor for the low range gear shifter. basically as you move it to low range, that sensor triggers and overrides the 4wd button.
Disconnect that plug and you will have to manually use the 4wd switch on the low range stick each time to select 4wd or 2wd.

beats tracing wires and running relays.

Crawf, this applies to pre 2005. It's not feasible for you to have 2wd low. Only on sr5.

Crawf, there's a mod on here that allows you to switch between 2wd low and 4wd low, it's a very easy one to do and brilliant for reversing trailers

Thanks Kam. Been busy with the Yuletide season , but was hoping to have this mod switchable from the inside of the cab. That hot exhaust flex joint wont feel so nice on the arms when pulling the plug. And finding it late in the evening Might be a task.

Webbo - that link is to a mod is for the mk6 up hilux (kun). Is it the same for the LN165r - sr5 mk5 with the 1kz, and ADD?

There is the ecu on the kick panel and behind the glove box on the left . Anyone had luck splicing the wires to make it work ?

Just unplug it. It's all accessible from inside the cab after that. You'll see what I mean when you try it. Leave it unplug at all times. Have a play and you'll see what I mean.

Keep in mind this only works for sr5
