Engine corosion

Postby Craigo pom on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 5:32 +0000

Hi guys, im new to the site and to the hilux world,
Iv had a '83 LN65 2.4D 2L for a couple of weeks now BUT uncovered some big issues with the engine.

The aluminium housing which the water pump + other bits bolt to has badly coroded around where the water pump fits, discovered this as i had some coolong system issues.
So firstly is this a common thing?
what would be the best fix, engine swap or replace the engine casing and rebuild
and lastly other than a straight swap for another 2.4D 2L what other engines go in and what sort of work is required?

obviously their are big swaps like for a V8 etc but id like to stay away from that and preferably not need an engineer cert..

Thanks guys for any advice available in advance :D

This is common if genuine Toyota red coolant is not used.
Have seen first hand a 3L diesel with over 500k on clock, regularly serviced and only Toyo coolant used and looked awesome inside, the waterpump bearing had finally gone which was what needed replacing, but housing was not eaten/coroded.
Get the rad checked/cleaned while it's all out.

Engine mounts/block for 2L, 3L & 5L are the same so any of them will slot straight in the hole and accessories will bolt up. May need to swap sump's, etc. depending on what vehicle the doner engine came from.
Technically you will require a mod plate but since they look exactly the same no one could tell the difference without pulling it appart, so I wouldn't bother expecially since they were a factory option.
