Strongest drivetrain

Gday guys,

Just wanting to know which model hilux has the strongest drivetrain up until an early 90's model? I have a spare LS1 V8 and turbo kit that I will be using in a conversion for a weekend toy and will be doing most of the work myself. It will be running around 300rwkw.

I was thinking a late 80's one with the live axle might handle the torque a bit better, There must be some high power hiluxs kicking around out there, what combos are you using? I have also heard putting 80's series cruiser running gear is another good option.

Cheers.

Yeshi

I would seriously consider 80 series diffs, or more so patrol diffs if you really want to do it properly !

Cheers, Dave

none of the standard hilux gear will stand up to 300kw for very long. I would be swapping in a 60 or 80 series housing and using longfield chromo axles, CV's and hubgears. You will also need to think about the tailshaft uni's and transfercase input/output shafts also if you are going to give it a hard time.

ideally u want to run the chev auto with a much bigger transfer case, none of the hilux G,W,R gearboxes will handle the torque for long, a H151 from a 80/100 series mite if u were really keen to keep it manual.

I really dont know if this is any help but over 10-12 years ago i nearly baught a 93-94 rigid front and rear lux. Originally a 2.8L diesel and was running a blue printed VS injected 5L with from memory about 260kw. Was running i think from memory the diesel 5 speed and had Dana or Dyna Diffs (sorry not sure on spelling) from a Toyota truck. I believe and may be wrong, may have had the truck centres in the diesel diffs etc. Was all engineered, and only reason i didnt buy was at the time i couldnt insure it and use it offroad for what it was worth. In the end i baught a Modiffied Turbo Diesel instead. hope this is of some use, cant remember the other details etc. It may have had the VS 5 speed with a Marks addaptor kit but i just cant remember the details.

i would run a Buds Custom diff housing with a patrol center and longfield axles.

chain drive transfercase is much stronger than gear drive.

mine handeling the torque multiplication care of the crawl box fine so far....would have the equivalent in compound low of much more than 300kw through the reduction gears.....

lots of options out there....depends what you want to do end of the day.

Bud can build a housing to pretty much suit anything...even a 9" ford center.....
