Shattered my CV!

Postby Luxy on Tue, 31 Aug 2010 3:43 +0000

And I wasnt even giving it a hard time! It was on the bitumen coming through the city late sunday afternoon.
I had been up at Echuca to stay with the folks the weekend, and we took the kayaks up as well for a paddle.
I had it in 4wd to get down to the river as the track was a little slippery. When back on the black stuff again, I noticed a bit of a wobble a the front end, but thought it might of been all the mud flying off, as it was muddy in the area!
Then coming through the city, the front of the car was shaking for a bit, then it was fine again for the next 30mins.
I almost got home, as I turned into my street, and it let go, making fun crunching noises
Since it was dark, and I was home, I didnt really care too much knowing it would be a cv or a wheel bearing that had let go.
Next morning, because the mighty hilux is sooooo extreme... ;) .... I drove it around to a mates garage, very carefully about 2kms away, where I pulled it all down, put a new cv in and put it back together and running again. I hadnt replaced a cv on a ifs lux before, but it wasnt too hard to do, so that was good. Save a few $$$ doing it myself too!
I ONLY got 531,000kms out of the original one  :)
Better do the other one as well soon :-k
Plenty of time though, as that boot wasnt split or anything like the other one I replaced was.

Finished!

Just recently had the front left corner clunking on my '03 SR5 when on full lock in 2WD and 4WD also sometimes when dropping off a gutter or rock lip at low speeds i can here it aswel, noticed that the CV outer boot cover has been broken at the top where it is hard to see, (god knows for how long) i reckon that the joint has probably been compromised so in this case prevention will be better than cure and i am going to get it replaced before shes goes BANG!! when i'm in the middle of nowhere. While i'm at it i will get the other side replaced aswel becoz i have heard that once one is replaced the other can follow suit for some reason?

Just wondering what brand replacement CV you used and how you have found it since its addition to your vehicle??

I recon the best option is a reconditioned genuine one. Mine only cost $150 and is much stronger than Repco ones.

Cheers,

Chris.

If your in Perth there's a place in Myaree called Outer Control. They do everything to do with CV's. Asked them last time I was here getting boot done and usually bout $350 for new cv joint for them to do it.

Just an option

A few members have run the repco ones but found quality was a bit poor and opted back to Toyota cvs
