Cracking/dinging noise when moving

Postby BTom92 on Fri, 06 Aug 2021 9:18 +0000

Hey guys - new to the forum.
I own a manual 2003 petrol SR5. Since I have owned the car (over the last two years), I have noticed a metalic ding/crack noise when moving off from first gear, and also reversing. Its not consistent and never occurs in any other gears or once the car moves.
I thought it could be related to a loose trim piece or chain attached to the spare tyre, but nothing has solved it. Any suggestions on what it could be?
Thanks in advance.

Thinking a little outside the box here ... Can you try using your phone to record the sound and post the *.wav sound file so we can actually hear what you're talking about?

Universal joint? That's what it sounds like :?
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

I was thinking worn bushes or sway bar rubbers, but without more info it's a bit hard to tell. That's why I suggested a sound recording?

Sorry guys, was sick for the past few days. Will try and get a recording today. I will look back through my records, but I think my u-joint was replaced only a couple of months ago.

Is that around when this started? Maybe there's the problem? If not then it isn't the problem.

I tried to get a good sound recording, but you couldn't hear it clearly. I am going to try again tomorrow.
I've had the car for roughly two years and noticed it from purchase. I didn't think much about it at the time. According to my invoice, the rear uni joint was replaced less than 3 months ago.

I had the same problem and I think I found the problem. If you take one of the front wheels off you will notice there is a little bit of play between the wheel studs and the rotors, so when you move from forward to reverse the stud hits on the rotor. with the wheel off move the rotor back and forward and you will notice a metallic noise.

Hope this helps.
