5th Gear and Reverse Gearbox Problem

Postby scott.ayres1993 on Sun, 08 Jan 2017 3:50 +0000

Recently purchased a 2000 Sr5 2.7 Petrol Manual 4x4.

At First it was a little difficult to put car in reverse. Today I was not able to put car in reverse at all with car on or off and same goes for 5th Gear. I have checked fluids and all is good. I will be taking it to a transmission mechanic but any advice on what could be wrong or anything I could do myself to figure out whats happening would be appreciated!

Check the bush on the base of the gear shift.

See here http://www.off-road.com/trucks-4x4/shif ... 18543.html
Part that says BUSHING in first pic.

If the vehicle has towed in 5th this could be the cause, heavy loads and 5th don't mix. The 5th gear cluster is outside the box on the output shaft and buffeting from towing chews the cogs. Only a suggestion ;)
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Thanks fellas if turned out to be the two pins in the shift lever flange had worn down and just needed to be replaced. I actually did it before looking at that article Banksy posted but that article is actually spot on and would have helped a lot, thanks again!
