Gearbox overheating

Hey guys first post. Did a search without much luck.
I've got a bit of a mongrel 2.8 TD lux. Was a 1993 petrol then had a near new 1997 2.8 diesel and aftermarket turbo chucked in. The problem I'm getting at the moment is massive amounts of heat from the gearbox, so much that sometimes you don't really want to hang onto the shaft of the gear stick. It was intermittent but now I'm always getting a decent amount of heat, short or long trip. Engine temp is good, only effected on long trips a bit. Rear main seal looks to have shit itself because of this along with the line from the rear of my new alternator so looks like oil temp is rising? Mechanic just says "she's a big girl and works hard!" But I don't really agree. Any help would be appreciated. Sorry about the long post

You didn't mention what oil you're running or if you have changed the oil... that could be your problem... friction = heat.

Maybe try an oil swap to a better quality and you might find it stops, unless you've already done the damage.

Gearbox heat
Could be as simple as dump pipe shield and move exhaust away
To requiring a full rebuild

Dump oil replace rear main if it gearbox it's easy to do
Check drive line angles while you have tail shaft disconnected

Start with simple cheap stuff first

Then look at exhaust location
A lot of aftermarket are too close to side of box then go under back of box with a flex joint
Adding unwanted heat

I've got a gen5 2.8, with 33's in stock 4.3 final sitting at 2.3t unloaded pushes 3-3.5t when we go away and have no issues with gearbox heat but I'm not turbo

Yeah full service was done about 3000 k's ago inc. gearbox, diff oils etc. Not sure what oils were used as I got my mechanic to do it.
Exhaust was one thing I was looking at. It does run right along side the box, producing a good bit of heat.

Also just had all rear unis replaced to reduce a little shudder on takeoff which worked but now the shudder is in high 2nd to low 3rd. I'm a bit suss on the drive line to tell the truth but wouldn't know where to start with angles.

Have you replace 2 piece rear shaft with 1 piece
How much lift

You can get protractors from $40 for an empire one at Bunnings or total tools
There not as accurate as a digital (about $100 total tools)
I have both digital told me 5deg, dial told me 3deg differance
That was with 3" lift and 1 piece shaft

That won't cause heat it will wear out uni and cause fibrations

Yeah 2 piece shaft. Got 2 inch Suspension lift, 2 inch body and running 33"s.

I did have a thermostat go on me on a 2 hour trip home, just babied it home but that's when I started noticing the heat through the gear stick. Thermo got replaced straight away but like I said it has still been intermittent but not producing anywhere near this much heat.

We're halfway through a 2500km trip with the weather being pretty hot out west I think this may have made it worse

Just hoping we can limp home and give her a good look over then

When u get home
Idd look at replacing the 2 piece with 1
Just give the shaft place the rear section and a measurment of flange to flange for a 1 piece
You'll probley need 3deg shims, snake racing make them and so do many other places
You could ask the shaft place to check what you need and they might be able to do for you
Best money I've spent as I was chopping Uni's out at 7-10,000km in rear

Don't think the engine would be beating the box
It would
Be either the box itself or exhaust

Too easy. Single shaft sounds like the go.

I'll get a heat shield made up and see if makes a difference to box heating.

Thanks for the help

Does your exhaust go from drivers side to passengers at rear of gear box under transfer case,

Yeah goes straight under drivers seat then over to passenger side directly behind transfer case with a Flexi join.

Same as mine did, that's a lot of time for heat transfer
Deff look into heat shields
